Thread: '96 Disco Tdi with ABS playing up - any ideas?

Guys.....

Checked the Error code and it came out as : "22"

The info I've got on what that means:

Cause:
RCP Failure 1

Rectification-Checks:
1. Pump relay (doesn't switch off) - Don't reckon this is it otherwise I would hear the pump working continually ??
2. Wiring connection "Pump Monitor" to ECU. Where's the Pump Monitor located?


Anyone have any experiences with this code who could tell what it actually means and where and how to rectify ??

No unfortunately, I found that I've got a broken Engine Mount and Gearbox Mount that I need to fix first.....

The ABS light is not always on and when it does come on, it disappears again when I have to stop/start the engine again. The code that kept coming up last time I did the test was "22".

Which means:

To be honest, I'd like to turn it into a normal "non-ABS" vehicle as I've never really liked the way the ABS operates. When the ABS light is "on", I'm assuming that the ABS is disabled and the vehicle brakes better or the same as a Non-ABS vehicle. I've tried removing the fuses for the ABS (1 on the interior fusebox & 1 on the fusebox in the engine bay) but I still have the ABS light on the dash. Would really like not to have the dash light on as well. Not sure if there is a separate small bulb for the ABS light in the instrument panel that I can remove to stop the light from indicating....

I need to put some time into finding out what exactly does "RCP Failure" really means and where to look to fix it.....

For what its worth - read sometime back in one of the British LRover magazines that the MoT inspector said (in UK) not illegal to 'defuse' the ABS as it is not the primary braking system.

I disconnected mine because in the first minute of vehicle operation it was denying me any braking! A few internet threads about people going through red lights because suddenly no brakes thanks to the ABS. I pulled the dash bulb.

I am not in Australia, so not concerned with the law.

I have a 1998 with ABS and had the same problems with it. Removed the lamp from the dash indicator, it indicates a general fault from the electronics, not whether or not the system is active. Removed the fuse at the under bonnet fuse block to stop the pump.

If you are concerned about the law, I suggest that you replace the fuse with a blown one, maybe the same with the lamp.

If the brakes ever need bleeding you may have to run the pump, so do not disconnect anything other than the fuse.

Thanks for that..... I'm assuming the fuse u pull under the bonnet is the 30A ABS Valve one and u just leave the 40A ABS Pump one in?

What about the 5A ABS one in the Fuse box under the Dash? It's the one in Satellite-1 Position-4. Do u leave this in or out?

This is something similar that I find (but not that bad) when 4Wdriving. To me, it's dangerous when u don't have full control of your braking system when 4wdriving....

No brakes was a regular occurrence after work when I jumped in the vehicle to go home. Thankfully I parked in a long side street with no main traffic - by the time I was getting close to the intersection there would be a small "bang" under the bonnet in the direction of the ABS and brakes would return.
