Mind you these are not only for touring, I really want to do some serious off-road stuff with them too. Basically I want to see just how much trouble I can get myself and my Disco in, but I definitely don't need to go stupid with size.
Even the current 245/75/16s have a point where they rub a little when on full lock, that may be a steering stop issue, but apart from that they drive great. Worst case I just replace them with the same size and I'll still be happy :)

I hear you, and more and more reading doesn't really point to "wider is better", quite the opposite in fact. In any case it sounds like I've got a great middle ground with my already fitted 245/75/16 size.
(now I kind of like the option of the skinnier tyre at 235/85/16 but let's not go there)
Got me wondering though, I test drove an automatic 300TDI when looking to buy my Disco years ago, it drove really well, then when I bought my Disco which had a bunch of performance tweaks like the injector pump and intercooler etc. and was a manual it seemed to drive a little slower than the one I test drove a while ago that didn't have all the off-road mods on it, at least not as many.
The one I test drove and didn't buy probably had stock tyre size on it. Mine is slightly bigger as already discussed.
I wonder if this speed difference I felt was because of the gear ratio being slightly out with the 245/75/16 rubber and if there is something I can do about that from a gear ratio point of view, or if it's too small a difference to be able to do anything about.
I haven't been into my car stuff for years, I'm having a lot of fun with this gotta be honest haha :D
That could be a factor, but autos can work well with turbo engines as they keep the turbo on boost.Quote:

Wider just means there is a wider wall of sand or mud that the tyre has to push over.
