Help replacing water pump! 93 v8i

Need some help I'm trying to replace water pump and my first problem is the removing of the clutch fan after many hours today trying to break the nut loose I'm wondering if I'm trying to undo it the wrong way!!! Now if I'm facing the fan do I get it off clock wise (reverse thred) or the normal way. Cheers in advance

Simply look at the fan belts and work out which way the fan normally rotates. Vee belt engine fans run clockwise and serpentine belt V8's run the fan anticlockwise. The fan is unscrewed in the direction of rotation.

    You ground down a spanner?

I ground down the thickness not the opening size.

I found a big old Whitworth spanner, didn't fit anything I owned so it got ground out one end to 32mm and the other to 36mm. That covers 90% of viscous fans I meet and will be useful to me until I wipe my hands clean of grease for the last time. I also have a selection of steel hand made flat bar spanners made to hold the bolt heads on the belt pulleys, each one custom made because pulley bolt patterns aren't universal. I was ever so grateful for the P38 one the other day when someone's water pump let go in my driveway.

Sorry if I sound stupid but what do you mean by ground down the thickness? Can I just grab my largest spanner and grind till I get to the size I need?
