'92 Disco - V8i 3.5l - Auto - Problems
Hey guys. First post to the forum but I've been browsing the forum for quite some time before I got my hands on my 92 disco v8i auto with lpg conversion. I got it for free as my first project car. Should be fun. And it has. But I got some problems that you guys might have some info on.
So far: New battery (has been sitting around for 8 months, though it purred to life with I jumped it for the first time), cleaned interior, installed themo's from a range rover (model I dont know), cv joint (front left) was smashed up so I couldn't drive without being in diff lock and im fitting that soon, kingston springs and shocks, some new fat tyre's. And of course there's other minor stuff but that's not worth mentioning.
Problems: Fuel consumption in pretty appalling. So I was thinking maybe a tune up/ timing changes, new fuel injectors? Exhaust on lpg isn't smelly but running on petrol, it smells like fuel. (maybe that could be fixed by a tune?) Also you can smell fuel from the inside as well. So maybe a leak from a line? or is that just a land rover thing? Again it does have a smelly exhaust.
Anyways, i'm not a mechanic. I'm a classical musician. And I'm not too experienced with cars. So I'm trying my best with the help of my father and friends. I'd love some info about this stuff from you guys. Cheers!

Really basic tune up
Buy a cheap timing light off ebay. Set the timing at 10 degrees BTDC at idle. Suck on the vacuum line to the distributor advance capsule and see if it is holed. Replace as necessary, ebay is your friend.
Set the idle mixture on petrol using the screw on the mass air flow meter, there are measurements you can do with a multi meter but basically just adjust and see how it goes. A musicians ear can detect the point where the idle revs just start to drop a little, will give a leaner idle.
As for smells, these vehicles don't have a catalytic converter and an oxygen sensor, so their tuning is a bit primitive. Unfortunately good economy isn't a feature of land Rover V8's of this vintage.
