The stepper motor by the sounds of it, but it coukd be something like a vacuum leak causing it too.
Over the past week or so my discovery has been reving really high on idle sometimes and sometimes really low any idea what could be causing that?

MAF sensor could also be the problem. Has there been a back fire of late? That does not do the MAF sensor any good. Mine ( a 3.9 ) also on the odd time has a high idle issue for a few seconds then sorts it self. Stepper motor has been changed. Not because of this issue, it had almost undrivable idle problems. That was fixed and then for what ever reason (does there need to be a reason with a land rover? ) it back fired. Now I have the fore mentioned issue. Which I can live with

Thanks guys.
Nope haven't had it backfire and 99% sure no vacuum leak I do have a exhaust manifold gasket leak as I can hear the awesome tick tick tick noise but that shouldn't cause this problem. Will taking the stepper motor and maybe the maf out and giving it a clean help?
There is a test procedure for the stepper, but I can't recall what it is...
Something like starting the engine, then unplugging the stepper, turn off the engine, then remove the stepper to see if it is all the way out.
I need to look at mine - I've got issues, but at the moment I have the old busted stepper glued to a set position and it works ok, but it's not brilliant.
