This amount sometimes gets a bit embarrassing....
So waaaaay back in 1995 I had the privilege of pedaling a brand spanking new 300tdi ES Disco with all the goodies on more than one occasion. I say 'privilege' as I was 21 and the car belonged to a close family friend.
And it puffed black smoke on start up too.
If it doesn't clear after a few seconds then you might want to worry a little.
Thanks for the replies, making me feel better, but might check pump timing. Is the cover plate for the pump behind the tension pulley for the air con? No one mentions it in the info I've seen. Guessing that is where it would have to be.
How much you get slugged for new injectors?
I bought a set of genuine Bosch Injectors through Paddock spares (from memory) and including freight they were about $550 instead of around $900 plus freight locally.

Yes it is. You need a timing kit which consists of the bolt that goes in the breather hole in the bellhousing and aligns with the timing mark on the flywheel and a rod to place in the timing slot/hole behind the said cover.

Thanks Tom. Pulled the pulley off yesterday to check, before I read post. Had the tools already, it was about 1/2 a hole out of whack. Reset to centre and it seems a bit happier.
