Who's Running a Defender Transfer Case in a Disco Tdi300?

Hopefully if this works out, the plan is to find a complete Defender t'fer and do a straight swap.......

One more question I just thought about..... Since I don't know the full history of my Disco, how would I determine if one of the previous owners hadn't already installed a Defender Transfer Case? Is there any physical way of checking 1st? I know this is probably unlikely, but I thought it would be wise to make sure that mine still has the Disco T'fer b4 I start forking out $$.

Have a look at the Ashcroft ratio calculator (Ashcroft Transmissions - Ratio Calculator). It gives you the codes for the LT230 variants.

If it had been swapped already ,on stock size tyres you would be doing about 2350@100kph as opposed to 2250@100kph. If all you are planning to run is 23/85 (32") tyres then i wouldn't do the transfer swap, my tdi auto at 370K running the same size in 265/75 pulls well and still gets almost original mileage .
The only time i feel the need for more power is when towing up long inclines where i can just keep at 60kph with the camper trailer, or if you plan on going up to 33" tyres at some point.

And this also is what I've experienced as well and found it annoying with any sort of incline, mine drops down to speed levels that to me become a little bit annoying. Around town running my 235/85 tyres, it's fine except the fuel usage around town with the new M/T's tyres has gotten worse. I've currently put on some standard size tyres and giving them a go to/from work to see if my economy returns to what should be normal level. If it does, then to me, fitting a Defender T'fer will allow me to run my 235/85 tyres everyday, maybe get better economy and then the added benefit when it comes to towing. Less strain on the Auto too

I run the 265/75's day in day out, a pump tweak or vnt would probably give you the same result for possibly less pain.
I contemplated the swap but for the times i felt the need for lower gearing its not worth the effort, remove the first muffler, tweak the pump and a mild boost increase and you might find that its enough.

I've refitted some original size tyres (235/70/16) back on the Disco to see what it drives like and I must say there is a noticeable difference and the tyre size difference is a 10%, so, keeping my 235/85/16 tyres and running a Defender T'fer which roughly is a 15% change, I reckon it should work pretty well, especially on take-off...

This graph represents the change from a 1.22 (dotted lines) to a 1.41 (solid lines) LT230 in a manual 300tdi Disco on 235/85r16s. This kind of graph doesn't make a great deal of sense with autos; although 4th in the ZF with the torque converter locked is about the same as 5th in the R380.

Yeah, mines an Auto, so not sure how that compares..... I do know that running the taller tyres on mine does effect the economy in a negative way(that's even taken into account the rolling circumference). It's early days yet but just running the normal size tyres (235/70/16) as a trial looks like the economy is definitely improved. So I'm not sure, but I still think the benefits of running a Defender T'box will outweigh the negatives when running 235/85/16 tyres. My economy will hopefully improve as well, but then again I could be totally wrong...

Just fitted 285/75 16's to my 1996 Discovery 300tdi Manual

Also considering a variable vane turbo from Allisport to improve low down torque and stick with standard disco transfer box .
