    Steering Box

    Hi all,

My 95 V8 box leaks like a sieve and I am constantly topping up power steering fluid.

I can get a LR remanufactured one for $1,100 with 12 mnth/10,000 warranty. How long and how difficult is the changeover job on a V8 D1? I have been told by a mob that does it regularly that the V8 is at least easier to do than a diesel.

    Cheers

Sorry can't help you there but I can tell you they're really really easy while the engine is out...

    Easy mate , a 1hr job.
Mine was leaking badly so got a used one from a low k d1 for $60 and swapped them over in the dirt on the front yard by myself.
TDI is easier than v8 , I pulled this box out of a v8 myself and had to remove lower rad hose and oil filter from the v8 disco it came out of.

The steering pump died on my D2 a year or so ago and I got a brand new genuine LR replacement pump fitted for less than 1k.
I could have gotten a second hand unit cheaper But I wanted the job done properly so that I can rely on the pump Not failing me again.

Box not pump , I would only buy a used pump as a short term fix.
You could have replaced yourself for half that.

I change my 3 bolt box in my RRC to a more reliable 4 bolt many years back.
I don't remember it was hard, other than to line everything up correctly.

I would have fitted the pump myself But after a head on collision a couple of years ago my left arm/hand is not much good so I had No choice but to have Whyatt's in Geraldton fit the pump for me.
They also noticed that the Clown at "A Radiator Place" that did the work on my radiator had put the wrong coolant in the system, So they flushed and replaced the coolant as well.
The bill was just over 1k But considering the cost of the Pump and the other work done I think it was quite reasonable, Not to mention they most probably saved me a heap of money by spotting the wrong coolant issue.
