Hard to start again (big sigh)

Don`t know if this will help but it is a trick from xd-xf foulcan days[bigwhistle].
They used to do something similar when hot and the trick was take the exciting wire off the solenoid and run it through a relay back to the solenoid[thumbsupbig]

And it's always worth checking that there is a sufficiently good earth path between the battery and the starter motor casing. LR supplied earth cables can be a bit dodgy, and sometimes it's quickest to just run a nice fat earth cable from the battery negative to a good clean spot on the block. I've improved a couple of cars that way in the last 2 months alone.

Back in the Army days, I remember trying to start a IIa. One bloke in the cab pushing the button, and I grabbed the throttle linkage to squirt some juice in and burnt my hand. Pretty much all the amps were being drawn through the linkage. No wonder it was slow to crank. New earth lead and hey presto.

Twas the starter motor. Installed a new one Saturday, Old one was ome, so could be up to twenty years old. It was a Bosh unit with a Land rover oval on it. New one is a generic unit, but does come with a six year guarantee. So we will see if it lasts that long. As always you don`t know how average something was until it is replaced. It was a OMG moment when I first started the Disco with the new starter. Had to put my hand out the window and against the wall to stop the Disco from flipping over, well ok maybe not, but the new starter does have some grunt. Now the Disco will start hot first shot.

I don't want to be a kill joy but Good luck with the generic starters Danny, the market is flooded with them, they are usually made in India or china, if you take one apart the insides are not as good as the bosch ones, they usually weigh a lot less on the scales also as the materials are lesser quality , we saw one where the casting at where it bolts to the engine disintegrated, and that was one of those HIGH TORQUE Starters.

There is a mob in NSW called Machter auto and it one of there own brand named starters. Did a Google on them and they have been around awhile. Still most likely made in China and there name put on it, but at least it is a Australian company to deal with. Certainly did not buy direct from China or India. From the out side the quality seemed OK, the wire from the solenoid to the starter is a bigger gauge than the Bosch starter. So a I posted we will see how it goes.
