    Expedition shocks D1

Currently running a set of Bilsteins a few years old.
Setup is with LRA springs with abt 1.5 inch lift and polyairs.
I have used these shocks over the years and from experience think i need more damping on the rear when fully loaded ie romote touring/desert trips.
What are some good options for rear shocks for this type of trip?
Then i would carry the billie as spares.
    Thanks

    hi,
billies are re-build-able...far better to have them professionally done, new bushes...and advice from billie agent .
the air-bags should be run as low as possible and match tyre pressure to road condition/type. Go Far...Go LIGHT...
ie shouldn't need to carry spare shocks (ok one if you must -if really going remote) make sure the rest of the vehicle is tip-top condition, drive conservatively ....last year I did 10000 km in 6 weeks and the only issue was a destroyed (chinese) wheel bearing...(spare timken was carried)

    good luck robbo

I am talking about off road, very remote. As light as possible is still as heavy as the vehicle is ever likely to be - 2 spares, 50 litres water, 150plus litres of fuel (at beginning at least), supplies for 2 or 3 weeks. With these loads in true remote desert conditions the shocks work hard every day. Under such conditions its good to understand that suspension parts can fatigue. We might be talking less than 100km per day kind of work.

Loanrangie - I have had Konis in the past and did not like them. I had them rebuilt and they failed within months after that and I lost faith in them. Billies have been good but just think a bit more damping would be nice. What Koni's are you running. I wonder if Old Man Emu or Terrafirma might be ok just for expedition use?
    thanks

Don't touch the ome or terriblfirma, rubbish compared to bilstien or koni.
I would look at Big konis, like the raid 90, huge shock, and adjustable.
I much prefer koni over bilstien.

I went for Bilsteins and King springs. Have been punished mercilessly over the last couple of years through several outback trips (11,500km and 7,500km being the furthest.). No problems whatsoever.

They are the gas/hydraulic model 312 i think from memory, i expected after 10 years that they would need replacing or rebuilding but after the new bushes they feel like new again.

That's a good outcome as the road going 30 Series (mono tube) Koni's can't be rebuilt as the bodies are crimped to hold the circlip in that holds the end cap.

I should add that I am changing my load config.
Previously I had 3x Rhino bars and basket with spare and a few other odds and ends on top. Weight was kind of vertically above the axle.
Now I have a twin spare rear bar so there will be more weight behind the axle but no roof rack.
That will put more stress on the rear suspension even though there will be no net weight penalty.
So if the billies struggled before I am assuming they will struggle more now.

In what way are they struggling? Compression or rebound? Or fading?
