noise from diff, also diff centre options be lockers or lsd's

okay so iv noticed a wining sort of noise coming from one of the diff's and changes at differant speeds and loads and comes and goes, i have recently fitted a new gearbox and everythings been regreased and fresh oils throughout from penrites recomended list's for my year model tdi300 discovery

where next should i search for said noise?

also i see fit to kill 2 birds with one stone is there an option for an auto locker or lsd for the rear diff ?

and i am aware that the axles and pinion gears can become the next weak link once fitted with some sort of rear diff lock front end im planning on saving my spare change for a bit and going for a harrod e locker up front with maxidrives and some other components from ashcroft probably(i just want to do what i can so things dont break unexpectadly in the long term i plan on doing some big and possably harsher driving with this rig so if i can prevent a few weak points at the same time thats the path i will take)

Unless you can pin point it to the diff's i would be looking at the hubs.

Stick your finger in the oil filler hole on the diffs to see if there is any metal in the oil

I suppose you've checked for play in the pinions, and jacked up the wheels and checked for "grumbles" when you rotate them?

My D1 has a Detroit Locker in the rear, and a True Track in front. It was originally being setup for rock-hopping (by the previous owner), but I use it for touring. No problems at all, once you get used to their little idiosyncrasies on the road, and off-road driving is a breeze - just point her where you want to go and enjoy the ride, no air or electric lines to worry about.

Could it be the transfer case?
Does it sound more like it's coming from the front, rear ... or centre of the floor area?

For diffs, I'd try the simple trick of removing one prop shaft at a time, and driving with the CDL locked to maintain drive going. Obviously not too hard or fast, as of course more damage could be inflicted on other bits and pieces.
All you'd want to do is drive slowly enough to listen to any changes in any noises.
It's the easiest way to figure out if it's front/rear or transfer case/centre diff or something like that.
    Arthur.

I recently replaced gearbox and the whine type noise that apears above 55kmh was present with cdl engaged and front prop shaft out front bearings look okay as in seems like theyv been done recently
Heaps of grease in there im thinking its something in the rear diff but the front diff has play tho im just unsure of the process to adjust lash

Also diff oils changed in the last week and no metal filings anywhere and the t case makes a differant kind of noise so probably not that i think

So that eliminated the front diff as the source for noise.
do the same for the rear diff too now, remove rear prop and drive on the fronts.

if the noise remains the same under load/no load, then almost certain to be a bearing in the transfer case or something like that.
if the noise changes whilst driving on the front axle, then almost certain to be rear axle.

A month or two after I got my 300 Tdi, I was on a short drive and out of the blue, the car made a bang/pop noise and no drive. Coasted to a stop, thinking the worst.
Car came with an electric brake controller, so my initial thoughts were that the transmission went bang(why the pop I dunno, but that's what it did).
After a few minutes looking under the car for a pool of transmission oil, everything was clear .. no obvious damage made or done .. but still no drive. My thoughts with the brake controller was that a previous owner probably towed a heavy trailer of some type and either the transmission was likely to break/bang or pop .. or that a diff will let go.

So now it's about 11 oclock I'm in the middle of nowhere and I have no drive.
Reached over to put it in low range and CDL locked(to check for both transfer case and one of the axles being busted), and noted that the lever wasn't in high range!
The bang-pop noise was that it jumping out of high range!

Back in high range, I at least had drive again.. but a god awful whining noise under a little bit of load. Completely quiet (as in zero whining noise) with a small amount of trailing throttle and or no throttle.

Drove it gingerly for a few weeks until I could drive it to the place that replaced the transfer case completely with one of their ready to go change over units(while I waited, as I don't have any other vehicles to get me around).
New T/C in and the peace and quiet was nice to have back again

yeah it changes with speed and i noticed a differant kinda noise which was pretty normalish with cdl engaged and in low range yesterday while i was at glasshouse mountains but the noise could well possably be a rear bearing or a carrier bearing tho its getting no worse or no better as i add grease to places starts around 50 k an hour and then gets louder to 80 then starts to get quieter above that at 100 its a very faint level i have to adjust the lash in the froont diff when i get a day i can use my uncles hoist and go from there

the worse part is i know its something really simple but theres so many things that are simple and can make noises its frustrating hahaha

the noise has changed to a more higher pitch noise and has started coming and going more so now -.-"

my front diff has alot of slop that im hoping to eliminate with a spare front diff centre i grabbed from old owner i bought the tdi300 from but im still no closer to working this noise out tho my attention has turned to a loss in power thats graduly getting worse but unfortunatly i have to wait till i get paid before i can replace anything to work out where im loosing said power tho -.-"
