Well to a certain point I agree. I guess if you have good quality control on the manufactured part in the first place and it was used within conditions and serviced properly then it should be 'reliable' for the design life - but the design life has probably way expired by then. A long time ago when I used to work in the industry it was 7 years minimum design life requirements from the OEM (not sure about LR and this wasn't for 4x4 vehicle parts) and the actual design life from the supplier was 10 years. All of the testing was done for 10 years lifespan.

My wife was driving but to be fair to her I felt the vibration and thought that it was a change in road surface conditions as we had just been though a town. You live you learn...

I was in same dilemma recently. Even though my disco runs ok and I've done a lot of work to it, was thinking that it's just getting old and wouldn't mind something shinier. Even had some test drives of new utes etc. To be honest, none of them had a soul. When i get in the disco i just get a nice feeling i don't get in other cars. So yea, decided probably keep it longer and spend a bit more.

For the gearbox it helps to lift front of engine so that the back tilts and gives better clearance to get at top bolts. Few extensions with those wobbly connections so you can get an angle on helps. I made a wooden box for the jack so that the transfer case sat in it nicely and could easily manouvre the whole assembly. Check you gearbox mounts while at it. Good time to change if they are old. I added a higher capacity oil sump for the tcase too while i had it out. The flat bottom help to balance on jack.

Change the brass? ring that sits in your fly wheel too while your at it. Make sure you grease clutch components and the teeth on the shaft that goes into clutch plate. Pretty obvious stuff. Don't over do it though, dont want grease everywhere.

As mentioned change the rear main, forget the gasket that comes with it. Use rtv blue, lots of it.

For sure you'd want to do stuff like that. Replace anything with difficult access that ain't broke while you have access.
Another thing I'd look at changing(if you haven't planned it) is the flex plate.

OK so I have finally acquired the parts.

The question is; Will an auto trans for a TD5 go on to the TDI300? It looks the same but looks can be deceiving.

Also, I am assuming that I need to get a new oil seal for the transfer case to transmission on the transfer case side.

Anything else I should be doing while I have practically the entire car apart? Am planning on changing the rear main seal, trans. sump gasket and obviously new fluids all round.

A TD5 trans is controlled by the engine ECU. There is no ECU in an Australian delivered 300Tdi so it's not possible to use a Td5 trans even if it did bolt in.

Or it'll be an expensive job to complete if using something like a compushift from ashcrofts.

What you'd need to do to manage a throttle position sensor on a 300 Tdi is beyond my knowledge tho.

I have a D2(V8) parts car, and even tho my trans on the D1 300tdi is perfectly fine, I'd have liked to use the E model trans in the D2 at some point in the future, with (user) adjustable change points and if possible flappy paddle changes.

Too costly(on a D1) and too complicated and stuff.
