    Alternator bearing Shagged

So just got back from a week of 4wheeling and camping in high country. After an insane amount of dust and a few river crossings my alternator bearing started to squeel a bit of wd40 and its quietened off.

Anyway has anyone changed a bearing in alternator before? i'd rather not drop $3-400 on a new alternator as this one only 5 years old and still works fine.

Changed heaps, but not on this particular one. It's not hard to change the bearing, but getting it apart can be challenging if you haven't done it before. The ones I have done haven't even needed a press.

Me, I'd take it to an auto sparky, and give it a refresh while I was at it. Where in Melb are you? Bloke in Kilsyth did a great job on mine, $160.

Drop the drive belt off and spin the alternator and all the idler pulleys by hand before dismantling anything. Alternator bearings aren't too hard to change if you're careful but I doubt if a squirt of WD40 would stop one squealing. Sometimes it's just the belt that needs changing, sometimes an idler or tensioner pulley bearing.

    Good advice.

As for the WD, the bearings are usually sealed and it won't get in, so maybe it is just crap on the slip ring/brush setup, or between the armature and the windings. Give it a good wash or blow, if you can.

When i got back i took it to a carwash and tried washing it out, brought noise back with a vengeance.

I'll take belt off and check bearing just to be sure.

I'm decent with mechanics do all my own work i just needed a assurance that someone had done it before and it was an easy job

    hi
I attempted this a couple of years ago....normally simple job, but after 4 hours I gave in and took it to a local auto-sparky who did the job, new bearings, checked and cleaned everything....$120 cash...while I went and had a coffee....much more relaxing

the pro's do these all the time...me once in a blue moon... so....

    regards robbo

Good one. Having a lathe helps, to cut the split in the split rings.

Hmm, do not quite what you mean with this? If you are only replacing the bearings the slip rings do not have to be disturbed. If you are replacing the slip rings maybe you mean to cut the old ones off in a lathe?
