    Camshaft

I have searched but found nothing definitive. At what stage do the camshafts wear far enough to effect performance? I suppose it could be dependant on oil changes and individual use?
We have an early Disco with just over 200,000 K's, is that enough use to have badly worn cam lobes? I have not driven a V8 rover before and don't know what to expect, this seems to be down on power.

Do 100K on cheap oil and your cam could be worn out. Do 400K with high zinc oil (e.g. Penrite) and your cam could be fine. The only way you'll ever know is to have a look. I suppose you could lower a borescope next to the pushrod guides and have a gander, just needs one rocker cover off.

I have no idea on previous service history. I have done 2 oil changes since we got it, I have done maybe 1500 k's on last oil change and the oil is colouring black already. That indicates to me it hasn't had regular oil changes.
    Thanks for the reply.

    In most cases yes.
The Rover V8 has a design problem in that the diameter of the cam is small so it wears more than a cam with a larger diameter. It would be pretty unusual to see a V8 with 200KK on it without a worn cam and lifters. It may be quiet but the performance and economy just slowly reduces.

I can say that both my d2 and d1 at 200k did not feel down on power. My 95 D1 has 300k and it's running beautifully and it feels strong but perhaps just starting to not be quite as strong at higher revs now. 200k though isn't a lot. In have mates also with 200k d2's and they remain strong.

    Cheers
