    Thermostat

Hiho folks, I'm a new (old 91 model) Disco owner and only done about 1500 k's in it so far, the temp never went higher than about an 1/8 or half the quarter indicator. A laser temp indicator measured just under 60C. When I removed the old thermostat it was stuck open. I put another thermostat in that was stamped at 88C, now the standard temp gauge in the instrument binicle shows just over half when up to temp. I haven't yet measured with laser on the housing to see what the actual temp is.
Is an indication of just over half normal with warmer thermostat?

Your temperature gauge is "buffered" and only gives a vague guide to engine temperature. This is a deliberate ploy by the manufacturer to stop customers ringing up the stealers every single time the needle moves more than 1mm past normal. Fit an aftermarket gauge if you want to know the true temperature but then don't be alarmed as it rises and falls with load.

In my case I found that the motor was over heating and the temp gauge never got past half. I guess that may have had some thing to do with the first owner of the disco replacing the motor due to over heating. I now have a dual gauge. One half is water temperature and the other is oil pressure. I also do not like a oil light as it only comes on when there is real low oil pressure. With a pressure gauge you can see if the pressure is correct. The dual gauge is not much bigger than a single gauge. a single is 50mm or 2" and the dual gauge is is 65mm or 2.5" . A single dual gauge is also is neater and takes up less space. So that is a possible option for you as well if you are considering a after market temp gauge.

    In Vic I'd go 88˚. But I don't have a V8.

That's the trouble with these 'tricky' locations people choose to use. It's hard to help. Contact Mario ( Roverlord Offroad spares on this forum) and see what he sells. That will give you the best estimate, you'll get to know one of our great suppliers, and he'll probably get you the part faster than if you go looking yourself.. mostly.

88deg is the Factory specifed thermostat, probably best to stick with that in EFI engines. Some people however do fit the 82 deg for what ever reasons they have.

14CUX has 5% enrichment at 81C which cuts out at 82C so those who fit an 82C thermostat risk running on enrichment during winter for a long time which affects fuel economy or diseconomy ( new word applying to RV8s) .
88C is the Goldilocks for 14CUX.
