Driving with no Power Steering fluid

Scenario: Driving your 300tdi with 700km to go the PS hose splits and all fluid is lost.

Will driving on without fluid damage the PS pump?

Its the high pressure hose so silicon tape is not going to cut it. Any other ideas?

Inner tube rubber and hose clamps. Haven't used it on a power steer hose, but have used it on truck air-lines.

You could take the pulley off and then replace the belt with the ac belt.
You will lose the alternator but keep the water pump and fan going.

I'd be cutting the high pressure hose off and bodging the low pressure hose to return the flow to the reservoir instead of the steering box.

    as bee utey says.

I assume, after the re-route, the steering will at first seem a little hard to turn until sufficient oil is expelled from steering box/lines. Had an occasion where the serpentine belt drive on my daughters D1 was 'lost'. The pump, lines and box were all still connected but not driven.

When I got control of the vehicle I expected steering to be like the old non power assist - basically no problem. Was I ever wrong. To turn the steering wheel meant working against all the oil and required huge effort.
