Coolant loss worry

i understand mate, which is why myself and other people here offered advice on where to try and find the leak and possible causes for it. the coolant alarm comment i posted was just in reply to the comment which i quoted you on. further back in this thread though there is probably all the info you need regarding coolant loss issues.

as an addition. when i changed my head and filled up the cooling system (which was completely overhauled) i had issues with coolant coming out of the expansion tank. it only happened once. i changed back to my old cap and it seemed to go away. but looking back i don't think it was the cap because i have since put the new one back on with no issues. I think my problem was being too paranoid about having air bubbles (traps) in the system and overfilling the cooling system. once under pressure, the excess coolant was expelled though the cap and this made me think there was a bigger issue somewhere. it was either what i just explained, or there was air trapped in there which possibly slightly over heated the car and then expelled coolant.

either way once i managed to get the cooling system in balance. this seemed to go but i still thought there was a problem because i was getting coolant loss and it was everywhere but mostly around the expansion tank. this made me think it was the same issue but it turned out that i put a hose clamp too tight on bottom radiator house and split the spigot that comes out, so when the system was pressurized a jet of coolant would shoot up and hit the fan and then get splashed all over the place.

it threw me off for a while because i thought the original problem had not solved itself but after having a pro look at it, turned out it was this different problem and the overfilling issue had resolved itself earlier.

when overfilled, i was getting coolant coming out of other places too. like from behind the housing which bolts onto the head (PS pump and water pump attach to it) and also the emptying out bolt on the exhaust side of the block. since the system is in balance, none of these places leak anymore.

Dont worry, I have had plenty of issues in the past with coolant issues

Not to recently my old ute was running hot and I could not work out why, turned out the water pump impeller has a corroded blade and wasnt pumping enough

I will find the cause ( or cure ), but at the moment, I just cant see any sign of a coolant leak..its bright green so you cant miss it

I am hedging my bets that it is the tight hose with the kink at the back of the head

It did look like the coolant came from an overflow outlet as it was a decent puddle

Cant see any coolant splashed around anywhere... I cant even see on overflow outlet

I know the coolant came out when I first parked because it was a hot day ant the tar was bone dry where I parked it

Under pressure, that "small weep from the top of the hose up to the overflow/expansion tank" could turn into a serious leak. I'd be replacing the hose first.

Not sure you need flow passed that kink?IMG_3456.jpg IMG_3455.jpg I have used 4 x 15mm rubber caps to do the job. The two on the engine secured with hose clamps. The two on the firewall that go to the heater matrix just slipped on to keep our dirt etc.

Also, I have had one of these low water alarms on my TDi300 for many years and it seems good. You do have to take some care to bleed carefully and get all the air out when replacing radiator fluid (otherwise the alarm tends to sound).

Hose kink is in the process of being removed. Its a fairly tight kink so I am guessing it is restricting the flow quit a bit

mmm OK...so that kink wont matter then ?

My mechanic mate also suggested it could be the cap not venting on the expansion tank.

I think he said he had a pressure tester for testing the coolant system, so when it gets its fluids done we will test it out

I'm pretty sure it will.
Heater hoses you can see in the engine bay appear to be part of the engine coolant flow.
