    300tdi Scored Bores

    Good folk of the forum,

I have just taken off the cylinder head after a big overheat and have discovered that the bores are scored. Can anyone offer any guidance about the prognosis? How much scoring is too much and what would you do in this situation?

After taking off the head bolts, a rank odour also started to escape. I imagine this is burnt oil?

    Many thanks,

    Jim

They might hone out saving a rebore, but will depend on your machinist, tolerances and how it measures up for oval and taper

At worst it will need to go +.010, so you will need new pistons

rings and piston will be showing clear signs of damage, bore, new piston, rings and bearings.
Full rebuild and it will go for another 500000km
    cheers

    Ps
You could buy another second hand vehicle (even Toyota) and still have the same problem that somebody done a bodgy job on and not pick up the problem on a test drive

    Thanks for the suggestions fellas.

A home hone would probably end in tears I'd imagine. Any recommendations for good places to take it to in Melbourne?

The Toyota dig was an unnecessary jibe at this legendary marque.

    ....
    Which side of Melbourne?
If you're close to Kensington, I've been told of a good engine reco chap in that area.
I'm going to use his services to do my D2 V8 soon.

ps. jibes at legendary marques are allowed if coming from experience. My Toyota jibes come from having to work on my dad's 4.2 diesel series 62... oil guzzler that it was

That mark is actually piston skirt material. A rebore and new pistons etc required....
And the headis likely to be soft now also.
    You're right, it must've got very hot😮

Well, if its up for a set of pistons, may as well get the crank checked and ground and new bearings, Bearings are actually cheap, the machining is the $$$ bit, but the ESSENTIAL bit

You will pay for quality machine work, you wont escape that, but you have a brand new bottom end that will do 500k

Look for guys that recondition tractor motors and truck engines in house, they can often get good parts cheaper than what you think

If you not scared of putting an engine back together than you can save a lot of $$$

I would also get the camshaft checked as well, and maybe even re ground ~ $180. Give Clive Cams a ring at Ferntree Gully 0397585977 about this, Last MGCC Restorers Visit

They will be able to help you out with machining as well

Thanks for the guidance and suggestions. Much appreciated. I'm in the south east of Melbourne but the suburbs mentioned I can get to easily enough. Happy to do some travelling for quality work.

It's no doubt got some good motoring ahead of it.
