    Suspension

    Hello,

i have been looking at getting suspension work done to my car for a while but then thought for now, seeing as i have no money for myself i might just change bushes etc. to make it ride a bit nicer. i thought of changing shockies too but upon closer inspection it seems i have koni adjustable shocks, so from the rave reviews i've heard of them here i am inclined to keep them and just do bushes as mentioned. The springs will need changing at some stage. not sure what they are. they are blue. from looking around the only same colour blue i could find were bearmach springs.

ok so i contacted Mario and Heather and he said that they supply rubber bushes for OEM and that a lot of aftermarket shockies won't fit these.

Anybody know where i can get bushes for the koni shocks. everywhere i look seems that i have to buy the whole thing or there is not enough info on the bushes on whether they will fit.

superpro has two types of bushes, ones that say original shocks and ones that say aftermarket shocks, which is a bit vague. i'd probably rather put in genuine koni rubbers.

that was my first question. the next one is, in the future when i upgrade my springs, i wanted to put king springs tapered. they have a few different ones, constant load HD raised tapered, HD raised, normal. for the front another story. just with the rear though, i generally don't have much loaded in the back unless i go camping. the idea of tapered springs i like though. i do have a long range fuel tank though. would those HD 100-300kg tapered springs be too harsh on empty load? it already feels harsh now but as i said need bushes and a frame work and have no idea on stiffness of my current springs.

would the king springs be matched well with the koni shocks?

on a side note, i spoke with apt and they are bringing tapered springs out for discos in February according to the guy i spoke to.

ok i seem to be talking to myself here but i found the part number. it's stamped near the bottom of the shocks. mine are 30-1615. so the tough track monos.

finding bushes that fit them is the next issue now. spoke to two suspension places and both of them said the OEM landy ones won't fit.

if i go super pro i can get all four corners done for $125. the guy said the koni original rubbers are pretty dear and probably be in the vicinity of $150 total. he will find out for me on monday.

he said they don't use rubber bushes anymore there unless a customer specifically asks for them.

I too have Konis and I replaced the shock bushes recently using rubber at a cost of about $2.50 a rubber (McKay). Works out at $35 for the whole car. Not really a urethane person for shock rubbers...

do you happen to know the part numbers or which bushes they were? did you just contact them and tell them the shockies you have and they provided you with the correct bushes?

the konis i have do not seem too big, so wonder if the OEM bushes will fit. I can see how they may not fit on the raids etc. but i think mine are the lower end of the scale when it comes to koni 4wd shocks.

They were the original size. I think that I got most of them through supercheap.

Can't comment on the bushes, but on springs have you considered keeping the springs and just fittings airbags in the rear, so you can adjust the airbags depending on load? Worked for me.

Not really, the springs are fairly old n sagging, to be honest would rather get new springs n make the ride nicer. Then I could possibly look into air bags.

"Below bushes that may be ok for your application. A168 is correct for rear upper as per our catalogue. We do not have the correct for pin type bush but A1032 is close , you will need to check dimension against the ones fitted to your vehicle.

    A1032
    I.D 12.5mm
    O.D 31.5mm
    Length 15mm"

Just FYI. got the above answer from Mackay Rubber regarding bushes. Below is what i wrote to them. I assume the part numbers he gave me above are for the Koni shocks and not original LR ones.

"I currently have Koni Tough Track shocks on my 1996 Discovery 1 300tdi. The part number for the shocks is 30-1615.

I am chasing rubber bushes (all-round) for these shocks as the existing ones are in need of replacement. I believe the upper and lower fronts and the lower rear are the same part. The rear upper being a separate part.

Apparently the Koni shocks have different bushes to the original shock absorbers but I cannot be sure. A member from the Landrover forum has the same shocks as me and he mentioned purchasing bushes from you guys just recently."

Speaking with a suspension place this morning, the Koni original rubber will be $109 delivered. Pretty dear. He did give me some good info though. said for my part number shocks, they changed the top eye bushes in the rear at some stage. there are two sizes for that part number. one has a 10mm pin hole and the later models have a 14mm pin hole.

    hi there..
a couple of years ago I replaced original springs a shocks on my 96 manual disco....yellow king springs +2" (40 mm?) Medium load, and bilstein shocks....best thing I have ever done....
after that good experience , last year I replaced OME shocks with Bilsteins (already 2" lift) on my auto 96 disco... AND put on firestone airbags for a desert trip, for heavy loading reasons (not towing) . I found the airbags a bit too harsh and really dont think this was a good idea.

I also think rubber bushes are better for all round use, but I am considering a poly-bush set (not for shocks though)...for my auto desert-tourer , and then removing the air bags....maybe...

    does that help?
    regards robbo
