Hey folks,
Just redoing some axle shaft oil seals in the stub axle - on the rear diff of a 97 300tdi.
The new seals come with a metal ring stuck in the back of the seal. Is that meant to be left there? I am not talking about that little spring collar that is in most oil seals.
Perhaps the metal ring is there as these seals get put in backwards compared to most seals - as they have to keep oil in the diff (lips trailing when installed)?
The old axle shaft oil seals i pulled out do not have the metal ring... Perhaps it is a new design or perhaps the old seals were aftermarket as the new ones are corteco...
