If you had to pay someone, who would you choose in Melbourne to fix & set up your rig

So I've got a big trip coming up and I'm going to try and do as much as I can myself on my D1 300Tdi, but I reckon I'll run out of time for some things and might end up just going to one of the experts with a list and asking them to do a bunch of things.

I've been to Ritters before and yes they are pricey but they seem to know what they're doing. How about others like Les Richmond (looks very knowledgeable on the website) or ULR or Range Rover Automotive etc. Wasn't there another one on Highbury Road too who were really good with Land Rovers?

The list keeps growing on what I'm actually getting done, but just in general who is most trusted to really care about what they're doing to an old Disco these days.

Not knowing what side of town your on makes it hard to suggest ideas.
There are a number to be careful of but forum rules hinder the name and shame thing so careful of that

What side of town are you on? Les Richmond will do a good job, but you'll pay for it. They are also very busy so at times they won't even accept work - you'll need to book well in advance.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    As in 3-4 weeks!
    But, they are good.

Can you share the list of what you reckon needs done.

If you don't do, or think you can do, much yourself, eg. say a timing belt, maybe call on some members for assistance .. even if it's just a simple helping hand but there to help with advice or guidance.
And with DST now, you could probably do more in a day than you think too.
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

That's a nice idea actually, I might need more than that now because a friend of mine who works in a workshop and offered to get it for a Saturday may have just pulled out, so I might end up having to pay someone after all.

Might make a few calls and see how I go.

Oh the list of things...here goes:
    - Timing Belt.
    - Change all associated hoses and seals and thermostat while doing it. Take out radiator while doing it and make sure it's all mickey mouse...if not, then deal with that when we come to it...wonder if there's a way to check if the radiator is good or bad before taking it all apart.
    - Check shocks and springs, probably replace suspension bushes.
    - Check all hoses and replace everything that we can.
    - Replace water pump, fuel filter and fuel pump, keep old okay ones as spares. Same with thermostat.
    - Install Ashcroft ATB diff in front or centre...someone suggested one or the other, can't remember which is a better idea. Already has Maxi Drive in rear.
    - Transfer case looks like it's leaking something, few drips always around bottom, better replace those seals or fix it up somehow. Also centre diff lock light doesn't come on so have to diagnose if this is just the light or, more likely, the centre diff lock just isn't engaging. I will figure this out myself by doing some tests and then figure out how to tackle it.
    - Replace whatever gaskets or seals we can with new good ones.

I'd love to be able to do the timing belt, radiator checks and back flush and hoses, and even installing the ATB front myself and maybe with someone's help, but I need a space now...so maybe I'll hit up sir Blcknight

I'm sure that list has more things on it but i can't remember for now.

Yeah, I remember he was offering services a little while back.

Other things I can thing of for 'ya:

    * while you're at the rad, check/clean the intercooler too.
    * do you have the obligatory EGT and engine temp gauges? for engine temp, many folks say get a head sensor.
I just went with an additional coolant sensor, fitted to the thermostat housing, easy fit easy wiring, still warns me of loss of, or low coolant.

When you're crossing the country past Pt Augusta, and it's blowing a northerly gale AND it's 50°C out, you want to be sure you're not killing the poor little Tdi.

You're thermostat should be fine once replaced. They really only give troubles with age.

ATB both! Centre is supposed to give good handling and minimal spin on gravel roads(plenty out WA way ) without the need to lock it.
If you only had the time/resources to do only the one ATB, then probably best to do front as a priority. CDL can always be locked, but a partially locked front diff will help immensely in soft going(ie. sand out WA way).

When I took mine on the test drive when I was going to buy it, it also wouldn't 'lock into CDL/4WD' with the difflock.
Engaged/disengaged to no effect, but moving back and forth whilst engaging/disengaging finally got it to free itself. Light on, disengage light off again
Sometimes it just needs that movement forth or back to engage properly.
I'm thinking if you don't get the light come on with the lever engaged and you've moved more than a few hundred meters, maybe time to test the light, wiring and the switch on the transfer case.
    Arthur.
