This is for my D1, that is NOT a daily driver. It will sit garaged, apart from the Sunday drive to keep everything nicely lubricated, and then taken on 4WD trips. This will be a mix of Victorian High Country trails, and then some long range touring around the country such as our trip from Melbourne to Esperance at the end of this year, which will include some little treks off the bitumen and hopefully a bit of sand driving on nice beaches.
I want something durable, that can take a beating, but is also reliable and not horrible on the road. Great on off road tracks and great aired down, and good in some mud. Like I said, this is not a daily driver and even if it was, it's a 300tdi I'm not too fussed about a bit of road noise
So was originally going to get Coopers, but after lots of research etc. etc. I have decided on either a BFG KM2 or the more elusive Goodyear MTR/Kevlar. I'm sure there will be other opinions thick and fast, but anyway these are the two I'm debating between now. BFG is always a great bet, I know the KM3 probably isn't too far away but the KM2 always seems like a great safe bet. The Goodyear seems tough and capable of handling heaps of nasty stuff too, but is just an interesting tread design and some say it's nicer on road because of the close tread blocks in the centre. I don't know, I've never driven on either, but they are interesting tyres and everyone says they're pretty great.
Anyway, what do you thinkThey're going on my D1 and size is 245/75/16, going on stock alloy rims at this stage.20160221_163841.jpg

Totally agree with JC or otherwise Bridgey MUDs
But
Whatever you do fit 235/85 D1 are made for this size and
Running 235 will give more jizz than the difference between

Muddies won't be as good in sand as a good A/T.
And as I remember you have a winch which helps you get out of the seriously cruddy sticky stuff up in the high country .. so based on that I'd say you're better off going more A/T than M/T.(if you ever plan on getting onto more sand).
[QUOTE=Young Angus;2732794]... it's a 300tdi I'm not too fussed about a bit of road noise...../QUOTE]
You say that now, but try 8hrs a day during your recreational time ... could quickly become an ordeal
Funny about how you say it's a 300Tdi and not too fussed about road noise, as the 300Tdi can be made 'quiet'.
I've sound proofed much of my 300Tdi engine bay and it's getting better(actually quite acceptable) even by modern standards!! .. and the only thing that breaks the silence is the road noise from the tyres.
Soon as I hit one of those new patches of bitumen where the tyres don't make any noise, the car feels basically modern. Tyre noise drops to close to zero and then the 300 Tdi makes a nicely muted hum.
AND! .. my tyres are road oriented Yokohama A/Ts .. and they make a racket. My next trick with my D1 is to soundproof the body a bit more(isolate bumps and road noise a bit better) .. and then wait for these Yokos to wear out.
Nice tyre, tons of grip on wet roads .. but that's about it.
BUT! .. I have my brothers TD5 with me at the moment and he has BFG KO2s and they're really nice. Even tho the tread pattern is 200 % more aggressive than my Yoko's, I reckon they're about on par for road noise .. but a poo load better off road.
I'd recommend BFG KO2's.
Someone recommended 235/85, but as I remember you'll need a 'camel cut' on the rear quarter panel and to stop rubbing on the chassis rails up front you need to adjust the steering stops massively, which stuff turning circle big time .. which is a huge advantage in a D1/RRC sized vehicle in the bush.
On my D1 I run 255/70's(came with car) which only rub on full lock up front but not enough that it needs the stops adjusted ... and bros TD5 with the KO2s are 245/75 which feel a bit more compliant. .. I'd say stick with 245/75s
Note that I've checked up pricing and some guys sell them cheaper than others .. and it comes down to load rating.
So if you compare prices from one tyre to another .. make sure they're the same ply and load rating to.
Arthur.

Interesting you've made the cab pretty much soundproof...I know it's not crazy noisy but unless a tyre is super noisy (Maxiss Bighorn noisy) then I might not be able to notice a difference. Having said that, there is a good chance I've currently got really noisy tyres on my D1 because they're Cooper ATRs and are probably a good 10 years old, at least, so the rubber has got to be pretty hard by now. So maybe with some fresh rubber on them it'll bring the noise down regardless of the type of tyre.
The MTR Kevlar has those close tread blocks down the middle which are meant to make it nicer on road, I have no idea if it actually works though.
I'll definitely be sticking with the size I have, it's already a cut above the size they are "meant" to run and if I put a bigger rolling diameter 235/85/16 on there it would underpower it even more...I don't want that.
KO2s are my fallback, great tyre that are reliable and people love them. Apparently General have just brought out a new AT and a new MT, interesting. Still, can't go wrong with the KO2 and really can't go wrong with the KM2 from what I've read. I just wonder how loud the MTR/Kevlars really are on road, or how quiet, they seem to be fairly rare.
The BFG KM2 and KO2 both sit at 48lbs per tyre for this size (in fact the KO2 is heavier at 48.4lbs HA), the MTR Kevlar is 50lbs per tyre, while the load E Duratrac is only 45lbs. The Cooper ST Maxx is 47lbs per tyre at this size and then just for kicks the Toyo AT is 45lbs while the Toyo MT is a whopping 52lbs a tyre.
Just as an aside the M55 tyres on my 110 have seen snow soft sand rocks and mud and deflation down to 12 to 15psi has seen them bag out and grip on rocks well. I have got 56k out of them already and they will easily see another 20k.

I have had the Kevlar MTR's on my Disco since 2009, done around 50000km since then, I just ordered a set of Khumo MT51 because I don't need such an aggressive tyre these days and didn't want to spend the $390 a tyre I paid in 2009.
They have been absolutely amazing, I cant recommend them highly enough, worth every cent. Mine are 265/75/16's however I'm going back to the 235/85's, I was running that size previously and its much better suited to the disco.
The MTR's are good on road, not to noisy and they are amazing off road, and super tough. I haven't had a single puncture in the time they've been on the car. I was off road with a guy in a patrol running the older BFG muddies. We went up the same rock shelf which had a sharp v shaped lip at the top. I went up first without an issue, he followed and the lip sliced the sidewall on both front BFG's on his patrol. The KM2s are much better and I've got mates that run them and love them.

I’ve had pirelli scorpion, bridgestone dueller and ko2. Some get a bit of flack but honestly I’ve enjoyed all of them. The bridgestones were very comfortable on road and just as good off-road as the others. The scorpions were on a toyota but great tires. My d1 now has ko2. Love the look of them a bit noisy on road but the rattles keep my mind off the tires. Great off-road. Stick to 245/75. Perfect size i think. The 235 you will definitely feel on take off. Puts your speedo out a bit too. Your braking will be affected too.
You can buy tires you want online from tiresales and have them fitted by a proper tire place of your choice as long as on their list of fitters. I paid $1k for 4 tires. N have good 2nd hand spare. But that’s my daily. If it’s just a weekender i would just buy a set of good second hand tires. When i say that i want to make clear NOT RE-TREADS. Just pre-used. Can get 95% tread seconds for a lit cheaper from tires places or online. Sold my duellers to another disco owner for 250 for a set of 5. They were at least 80% tread
