    Disable central locking

    Hey folks,

My central locking in my 97 disco is acting up - locking/unlocking all by itself.
I want to disable it until i get a chance to open the doors up and sort it out.

Does anyone know how to disable central locking? I pulled the fuse under the dash with the symbol of a door and key but the central locking is still active.

Is there a relay or another fuse i don't know about?

    Thanks!

If pulling the the fuse doesn't work you can always take off the door panel and disconnect the relevant actuator. It's a bit of a bother but it will do the trick. Good luck!

Anyone seen a control box/module somewhere?
I will probably leave central locking disabled.

Not exactly sure where the alarm/locking box is on a D1 but on a soft dash Rangie it's up behind the glove box on the left. Easy enough to disable, you just need to find the two wires to join together to make the starter motor work with the key. It took me around 15 minutes with a multi meter to identify which wires that need joining. Best do this with the box still plugged in so you can see which two wires act the same with turning the key to start.

    Oh right.
i wasn't aware my disco even had an alarm.
I don't have a keyfob or any dongle/immobiler thingo on the keyring. I just unlock the door with the key and the vehicle starts. Would that mean i don't have an alarm - just central locking...

I still had interests in Australia(WA) in 1997 and if I recall correctly an immobilser was required by law. I remember having to have one fitted to my late Fathers Cherokee when the law came in. For sure my 1998 D1 was fitted with a factory immobilser. The actual unit is behind the radio, a round metal can in mine called a "spider". There is, or was, a bypass plug available because the things were notorious for failing and leaving the car stranded. (ask me how I know!) Yours may well have been changed already? Fitting the plug only bypasses the immobilser, not the alarm.

Not sure about the ECU, it MAY be part of the window ECU which is known to give faults because of dry solder joints, or the multi-function unit. It is up behind the glove box as posted. And if it is doing odd things it is more likely the problem is in there, rather than the doors.

    Righto, thanks all.

I pulled the door card and just removed the linkage that goes to the electric actuator that controls the door lock. So now the central locking is disabled.
However the lock barrel in the door has a little micro switch on it that senses the key movement in the door.

Is it meant to set of the alarm if the lock barrel turns and the alarm hasn't been immobilized?

I removed the switch and there is still no alarm when i turn the key on... so maybe my alarm has been disconnected... However, when i turn the key off the car has always beeped a few times as if it has an alarm. There is also a little LED (like the ones that blink to let you know the car alarm/immobilizer is on) but it is never lit...

Basically i just don't want the alarm/immobiliser to go off one day with no way to stop it!

If you have Hawkeye (or maybe nanocom?) you can turn off the alarm functions. There are a few settings. From memory, you can also disable the central locking.

If yours has the alarm fitted, the easiest tell tales are:

    1. the volumetric sensor fitted to the passenger side B pillar. Above the seatbelt height adjuster you should have the small enclosure with the two sensors facing front and rear at about 45° If not you have a semi circular blanking plate instead(ie. no alarm)

    2. at the lowest part of the instrument cluster between the speedo and tacho is an LED that should flash when the car is locked(and armed). If it's not flashing with the car locked(central locked) then no alarm or disabled or removed.

A bit late now on may part but the easiest way to disable the central locking without getting into the door is the drivers side kick panel. Easy to remove and within that space will be one multi connector with 5 wires coming from the door and then going into the loom.
The power wires for the central locking(to lock/unlock) are an orange wire and a pink wire(among the 5 wires all up).

I used that plug and wires to wire up an aftermarket central locking system once each solenoid started to fail.
Mine has central locking but no remote(and no alarm) ..and I wanted remote central locking so got a cheap aftermarket type.

For the fuses, there are two.
Main one is the 4th one down left hand column (the long column of fuses), on the main fuse area. The other one should be in the satellite B row above the main fuse area. There are 6 fuses in that upper row, the central locking fuse is the 4th from the RHS(or third from the LHS)
(ie. far LHS is #6 far RHS is #1

Remembering that mine doesn't have the alarm fitted:
If you want to try to disable the alarm system (if fitted), there are two fuses for it on the lower C satellite fuse area. #1 on the far right and #5 second fuse from the LHS.

    Righto. Good info.
Yup mine has the volumetric sensor (wondered what that was attached to my headliner) so it must have come from the factory with an alarm.
But no LED flashes when i central lock the doors just the beep, beep, beep noise when i remove the key after turning the car off.
