Possible, but less likely than other possibilities.
Another known failure is the valve stem seals (would be my guess on such a low KM engine) pop the rocker cover off (can get messy but for only a second or two no harm done) idle the engine and you will probably see the fuming valve - only do this if you are prepared to have oil everywhere! - worse than normal for a Landrover [emoji23] [emoji23]
Otherwise. We can tee up a weekend for the compression tester.
That's a lot of blow by, mine at 375k is not even 1/10 of that and much quieter.
I'd check the oil pressure forst and to make sure the pressure relief valve is functionally correctly. Next is the turbo. Oil in the intercooler hose is a concern. Finally, pressure test the cylinders as suggested.
Thanks everyone. Will let you know how we go once we have it back.
The Disco is back in our hands. However still need to complete a compression test.
Compression test at operating temp. 348psi was target spec.
1 = 200
2 = 350
3 = 400
4 = 350
Wish it was more broken. Now do we fix just one? Probably not.
What is the documented tolerance between cylinders?
348, all cyls within 70 of each other?
Cylinder 1 obviously needs attention, question now is what has caused it?
I don't have a leakdown gauge, but with the adapter from the compression tester any leakdown gauge should be able to work. or just be a little more crude and fill cylinder 1 with compressed air and listen for where the air is leaking out.
Or just whip the head off. Considering it runs pretty well, it shouldn't be too bad inside.
Most likely looking at head gasket leaking into the oil gallery.
Could be just one broken compression ring, or could be a damaged piston. You won't find out until you look.
It is interesting as we thought it may have been dusted. However if it was we expected both cylinder 1 and cylinder 4 to have low compression.
It does blow a fair amount of blueish smoke which smells like diesel.
Another symptom was the sump seal and another seal (maybe it was oil cooler seal, I don't know the specifics of the 300TDi that well) that failed, these 2 seals were fixed by a mechanic.
It just seems too much of a coincidence for it not to be rings, but as you mentioned it could be leaking into the oil gallery.
Thanks for the advice gents.
