    As above. There is more than one relay in the circuit. There are different circuits for different models. There are different types of relays. Does it have electronic diesel control? Does it have cruise control. There is a "key in" switch, which if faulty will inhibit the starting circuit. The mentioned diode is in the coil circuit of the starter relay, and that relay has an internal resistor in parallel with the coil. As you have mentioned a Haynes Manual, look at diagram #10.

    Yep can see it in diagram, I wonder where it is physically?

    Anyway, car is at mechs workshop now. Hopefully he will sort it out, probably take him about half an hour.

    Yep its sorted but havent been able to talk to the mech to find out exactly what he did.

    update:
    @Old Farang .....it was the alarm spider. ****ing thing..now fully bypassed. I was wrong - previously he had bypassed the trans inhibitor switch.
    Well, now neither of those can stop me
