Question How to remove chassis cross-member from underneath gearbox sump?

Any advice for removing the chassis cross-member out the way underneath the ZF transmissions sump? I've removed the four bolts/nuts on each side. Using a rubber hammer I can tap it forwards or backwards, but cannot get it to drop down.

A floorboard or fence paling sized piece of wood levering gently against the trans sump while you tap it about.

A porta ram can be used to spread the chassis a little bit and it will drop out.

I reckon if you bought some thick allthread of the required length and a couple of the long bolts, you could spread the chassis enough for it to drop out.

On my RRC , I was able to drop it by whacking with a FBH backwards and forwards until the crud under the flanges falls out ( into your eyes) then it will drop out.

Thanks all. I spoke to JC on the phone this afternoon and he advised that if one of the top bolts on each side (furtherest front I assume) are left in place it is possible to tap it to swing forward with a hammer. Then once the dip stick tube has been removed from the sump pan, the sump can fit out to be removed.

This one only has four bolts each side (eight total).

Leaving the top forward most bolt in place it was able to be pounded forwards to close to the exhaust pipes. This provided sufficient room to drop the transmission sump, turn it 90* and manipulat it out and then back in.

While it was moved I smeered some copper grease on the area in hope of making any future job with it a tad easier.
