Ball joints WERE a weak point..

Very different animal. East/West, SOHC, front drive. Still fun though.

yep, just read up on it. the original 1970 128 berlina 4 door was the pioneer of east/west configuration as we have today. with separate oil sump for gearbox and engine, radiator in the cold airflow with electric fan and different length drive shafts. won the small car of the year because that configuration engine gave it a generous interior and storage space.

my mum had the 128 coupe SL as pictured on the attached. same colour, same rims, same everything. nostalgia. the interior looks awesome too. brings back a lot of memories sitting in there going up to my dad's restaurant or skiing in the mountains.

I once bought a rusted out 128 saloon and used the motor and gearbox in a small RWD dune buggy. My only miscalculation was to let sand get in the cam belt cover and it bent a couple of valves when it stopped. Ripper fun while it went.

Most certainly will be!. I already have a set of plugs - it was one of those going to do soon preventative jobs. I will be doing the rear main seal and clutch whilst it is out. Very shortly will be ordering big ends for it (it has 290K on the clock). I notice that most threads on here talk about replacing the oil relief valve as well. Is this a good idea?

    Thanks,
    Tom.

P.S. I don't see the point of putting a whole in the firewall of a disco - it would take nearly as long as pulling the motor out by the time the radio, dash, heater and a/c were removed wouldn't it?

i would have thought so too. besides with your engine out is a good time to look at other things that are hard to get to. like rear main, clutch etc. look for leaks the list goes on

    And on it goes...
The previous owner or 'mechanic' on this vehicle has caused me so much grief with over tightening of bolts that if I ever meet them I think I will break their #4!@# arms! Went to pull the sump off, the bolts are 10mm heads. 2/3 I cannot get undone. The ones that I did get undone needed a breaker bar! Thought that I would get my 10mm ezy out and attack them. All bar one beat the ezy out. Need a hex socket (having not long given mine to my 17 year old nephew for his first socket set). Some people should not be allowed near cars FULL STOP.

    Rant over.

If it's going to be like that, I am just going to have to salvage my day and open the nice bottle of Jacob's Creek Sparkling Rose...

And swear at the previous 'mechanic'!

there's your problem. if you drink beer you automatically become stronger and can undo normally tightened bolts.

Managed to crack some more sump bolts today, only four to go...

Guess I will be trying the rattle gun with a 3/8 socket hammered on. If that doesn't work, it's drilling time

Some people just should not be allowed near cars, especially those with single digit IQ and too much strength...
