Injector pump tweaking and upgrading turbos on my 300Tdi D1

So I have been reading up on a few things and I now understand that my mechanic simply tweaked the maximum deliver fuel screw on my injector pump. It drove fairly well after this and the EGTs didn't go too silly, but I wasn't sure what he did and I thought it caused a noise so I got him to change it back.

I've since read up a bit myself and felt like having a muck around. I am fairly certain my D1 had an upgraded intercooler installed by previous owner but I can't be sure, it does have an EGT gauge though. Anyway, I got under today and tweaked up the max fuel screw about 1/8th of a turn which is exactly what the mechanic said he did and it seems to drive a little nicer now, with no noise increases, so whatever these bastard noises have been coming from have already happened and extra fueling doesn't make them come or go.

I'm also in contact with one of the forum members about getting a turbo upgrade kit...specifically it's FBD Modifications and he is offering an upgraded rebuilt and ceramic coated turbo/manifold assembly and ceramic coated inlet manifold. Does anyone have experience with these on here? Looks like a good thing anyway.

That and I'm maybe going to have a play around with the inside of the injector pump, as in the diaphragm rotation and star wheel adjustments, as well as the smoke screw.

Of course any advice is very VERY welcomed as I begin my playing around with this I know this isn't a ferrari, but if I can make it more drivable I'd like to.

(of course I'm also chasing some silly noises so I have to get stuck into checking valve clearances and other things too but they're in some other threads...)

Boost plus extra fuel = more power plus higher EGT
IMO Fit a boost gauge and then play with boost and extra fuel in small increments watching EGT always
Find a test hill so that you have a base line to compare changes against
Small changes can make a huge difference but always drive to your EGT gauge

Have a read of Ian Peterson's PDF - I have attached it - many here have referred to this document for this job.

    Tuning_Land_Rover_Tdi_engines_Rev_2.pdf

also have look at the youtube clip - it runs through the process and gives you good visuals. It is in 4 parts I think.

Google "Part 1: Land Rover Discovery 300tdi Injector Pump Tweak" to find it.

What kind of money are you looking at for the turbo upgrade?

I'm in Melbourne, Kew to be exact. We would have been driving over to Esperance but my poor little dog had some surgery and he hasn't recovered so quickly so we had to postpone...so for now we are still in Melbourne.

OK, i was going to suggest taking it to a specialised landrover mechanic to have it looked at. i know two in perth but none in melbourne. i would assume there are a few over there though, so somebody else from here can point you in the right direction. they are quirky beasts and sometimes any good mechanic just won't do, you need somebody who has been working with these for a long time and has passed the psychiatric assessment which all will require at some stage.
