Driveline slack?

It is most likely to be the thrust washers in the centre diff that have chewed themselves to pieces, particularly if you like to keep a front wheel spinning while going up steep slopes etc.

You can replace the thrust washers without removing the whole transfer case, although it also may have wear in the other thrust washers in the case.

To do that you must remove the front nose of the transfer case which is a bit of work but not as heavy as removing the whole case.

I am thinking of rebuilding the TC myself. As with everything else on my Landys it is just too expensive to get someone else to do it.

Was going to use on the Ashcroft master kits:

And the overhaul manual:

I had a quick look through the guide, a couple of tools look a bit fancy. For example some strange adapter that Ashcroft sells to do up washers with an edge cut out of them...?
Anyone know if i need any special expensive tools to do the job?

theres a bloke on youtube called land rover toolbox he does a fair few video on lt230 so watch them itll give you an idea of how to go about it and tools you need.

Apparently the two(or three) tips for rebuilding the TC are:
1/. get an ATB for the centre diff from Ashcroft. Stronger and makes the car nicer to drive and the issue of eventual wearing and hence the same driveline slack won't happen again.
2/. at the least get one of their HD cross pins. Not overly expensive for a bit of peace of mind, and easier on the bank balance.
3/. the resleeving process for the case to stop the intermediate shaft leaks(Ashcroft also sells an appropriate sleeve, but you'd need to get the case machined up to fit this sleeve.

Just some stuff to look into while you're already in there.

I would have loved an ATB when I had to get mine done .. just not enough time to plan it all and mine's my daily drive(work and back).

So in regards to driveline slack.

Now i mentioned previously that i had some take up when you left from a stop. Now that i swapped centers out ive found that the take up or slack is gone.

Randomly watching a video on youtube by megasquirtUK seems to be a diff expert on land rovers. He pinted out that the crosspin being a harder material actually weara a slot into the carrier housing and that causes the slack or take up in driveline.

Sure enough went and looked at mine and it has ovaled the hole. Ive had this issue since i bought it and im sure that is a contributing factor to pin breaking
