From what I can see, we want the cool air coming in through the radiator, not being rammed down from the top into the back of the engine bay.
I've decided to add side vents for the Defender to my wish list. Maybe these:

It's like people who put solar panels on an angle on their roof rack and then wonder why there is so much wind noise and their fuel consumption rises. They've just created a wind block. The panel should be flat. Not the same issue of course, but just an example of not understanding aerodynamics, I think. Mind you, I'm just a novice at this stuff.
The angled solar panels help with traction. Seeing as landrovers are so fast, putting them on an angle increases downforce and helps corner faster and keep the car on the road when going at insane speeds.

About the cool-looking forward facing vent shown above, it's not just river crossings that concern me, but normal driving in rain. When driving in rain wouldn't the airflow push the rain in the vent and onto the engine, possibly causing electrical issues?
The same reply as river crossings applys to rain as above

But a river crossing is only a brief event whereas prolonged driving in rain would subject the electricals to sustained water pressure, making water entry more likely.

I'm thinking instead of roof mounted, maybe better doing it as a diffuser, mounted with hydraulic rams to adjust it according to speed.
May help keep a bit more downforce on the front to help with front end grip on those insanely fast landrovers!
And if angled just right, could help direct some cool air under the bonnet to help keep under bonnet temps in check too!

Only an issue with dizzy v8s if dizzy at rear, change to coil packs if worried
