Auto or manual? If auto, could the torque converter bolts to the flywheel be loose?
Tom.
P.S. Just saw- it is auto.
I have a weird noise i a1998 disco with 300TDi and auto.
it makes a clanging noise form he engine at idle and low revs but
if you put a medium load on it it goes away and when warm it is louder
if you stand beside it the cars sounds like a very loud diesel rattling away.
I have taken both front belts off with no change to noise and it has done 320k
thanks for any advice

I had an annoying tapetty clicky (metal on metal type) noise.
Did my tappets, even tho I 'knew' it wasnt' tappet noise, started up and noise still there .. did tappets again, even tho I knew that I'd done them right and it wasn't tappety noises .. driving me nuts.
Then I noted that it sounded more like it was at the front of the engine .. maybe coming from the alternator/waterpump area .. thinking maybe a loosened waterpump spinny thingo within.
Anyhow, in a noisy engine bay .. where do you actually start.
Put up with this for a while, when one day I mucked about a little and found that a small amount of pressure ON the serpentine belt tensioner obviously with the fan off .. noise gone.
Never for a moment sounded like it came from that area .. right there in easy view .. and not only that, the tensioner was literally about a week(maybe two) or so new!
Because it was new, along with waterpump .. it made no sense .. just expect a new part to be new .. working like new.
Anyhow, old tensioner back in .. nose gone
Money came back for the failed new one.
Actually that reminds me .. I need to order a new tensioner!![]()

If your having trouble pin pointing the location in a engine bay a long thin screw driver with the tip resting on the suspect site, then the handle on your ear can really help narrow down the cause for the noise. Ive seen on ebay mechanics stethoscope which would probably work even better. Might be worth checking the crank pulley/harmonic balancer, the glue/rubber insert may have failed. Check for play by removing the belt and wiggling the pulley with your hands if its failed you will feel it. Also check that the crank bolt is tight.
thanks for those suggestions and ideas, the torque converter bolts rings a bell as i had a
Marina with the same and it sounded like a sledge hammer in there.
I did check the pulley while i had the belts off and couldnt feel anything.
Is it possible to check the converter bolts from under the car readily
i should mention this disco had the engine replaced with one from my previous disco
but the previous disco was a manual and this is an auto so those bolts have been touched
and the engine was due for a timing belt which was done as well all in a workshop.
so i will be going back to the workshop next week when they are open to suss it out
gee they dont make t too easy do they, a old Ford Falcon or Marina you can get to it without taking anything offTorque converter bolts are accessible in a notch visible when you remove the starter motor. You'll need a 3/8" drive socket, 13 or 14mm from memory.
bugger
thanks for the info bee utey i was wondering![]()
the disco went in to the mechanics on Monday and i got the phone call today to say it was the harmonic balancer
and it had chewed out balancer and it was nearly ready to fall apart. good news is the crank if fine just needs a new key and
balancer, also apartently the balancer bolt had bottomed out.
thanks all for the input
