He might be getting confused with the td5 flywheel which is dual mass and cannot be machined, if I remember correctly.
The 300 tdi is a standard flywheel.
I am sure he would have checked the master and slave cylinders are not leaking as they will cause the pedal to stay on the floor.
I haven't read the other replies properly so apologies if this is repeating someone else, but the first VERY FIRST RULE ALWAYS of getting work done on a Disco is you take it to someone who firstly has lots of experience with these cars and secondly...who LIKES working on them! Even if it means driving an hour out of your way or getting it towed that far, you 100% of the time always go to someone like that because they won't rip you off for unnecessary labour because they don't know what they are doing, they won't do a crappy job because they hate working on it (like someone did to mine once and it was just a bloody windscreen), and they will know what they're doing.
I recently had a bunch of work done and I took it to a guy about 70 minutes away from me because he likes working on them and knows them well. Great to deal with, a great guy, and while one of the local Land Rover specialists here in Melbourne quoted me $1200 for a timing belt this guy was honest and quoted me a few hundred and I trust him more because he's more of an enthusiast.
Get it to someone like that and get their opinion, even if it's expensive you know they will do it properly and you'll have piece of mind that your money wasn't wasted on someone who didn't know what they were doing.
My 300Tdi Disco used to be owned by a forum member in SA and I've got lots of receipts (and a rear wheel cover) from Triumph Rover Spares, British 4x4 Automotive, and Sovereign Auto Services. Not sure if these places still operate but I know Triumph Rover Spares is still current and they have nice looking Discos for sale on their website so they're still right in there.
The fact that your mechanic hasn't worked on many Land Rovers is a huge alarm bell, get it out of there and take it someone who knows what they're doing. Your mechanic will understand, maybe even pay him a little for the time he's spent already, I had to do this once with my wife's Peugeot...it's annoying but he will understand...alarm bells going off everywhere haha TAKE IT TO A LAND ROVER SPECIALIST [thumbsupbig]

I don't know about Disco clutches, but I can say a genuine LR upgraded clutch for my 2009 Defender was only $1600 fitted, while even an AP HD clutch was $2600.
As others have said I'm not sure why a flywheel with only 130,000 kms would need replacing.
A LR specialist should be able to give more informed advice.

I faced the exact same predicament a few months ago when the motor in my D2a "Carked it" and the cost of the repair was going to cost $4,000/$5,000.
I decided to bite the bullet and get it fixed which pretty much bankrupted me But I now have a truck that is 100% reliable as I had fixed pretty much everything else on it prior to the engine issue.
It all depends on IF you really want to keep the D1 [thumbsupbig]

Last D1 was made in 98 IIRC. Any references to 99 D1s are sales pitches or claims they are 99 models just because they were sold in 99.Quote:

In SA vehicle registration papers are marked with the year of first registration, not the build year or model year. So a "1999" vehicle is probably just old dealer stock.
