    Advice needed...

    1999 Discovery 1 TDI manual

So basically the other day my clutch pedal wouldn't spring back up when i took my foot off it and was stuck at the floor, finally got a call from my mechanic today, he reckons it could be the clutch fork but wont be sure for certain until he takes the gearbox out estimating 8 hours labour as he hasn't really worked on too many land rovers before. He also said if I were to go ahead and repair whatever is broken, he recommended changing the clutch kit and flywheel which is fair enough. Problem is the good ol flywheel is around $1200, potentially costing me $3000 in a worst case scenario.

I feel like this is just too much to spend on the car and want to sell it but feel as if I flat out wont be able to sell it in its unrepaired state, or for a ridiculous loss (only had the car a couple months).
So guess i could repair it and sell it but have no idea how much for. I havent seen a low kms disco 1 tdi for sale so the value is really hard for me to guess, could end up losing just as much. Car has 130000kms.

    So basically my questions are:
Has anyone seen recently a late year low km and in good condition disco 1 tdi for sale? how much were they chasing?
If anyone has tried selling a similar example, was it difficult to sell due to the small amount available?

I'm just really lost at to where I should go with this, only a young guy and money isn't something I can be throwing away right now

Always a tough question. Over the years, I have balanced up what the vehicle owes me, how long I would intend to keep it etc. In your scenario, if the car has only done 130000km, it may be better for you to spend the money repairing it, in hope that there isn't too much else wrong with it.... having done the low k's....you could outlay more money on another vehicle and still have to spend money on other repairs.

I owned a car for 10yrs once, paid a low purchase price as it had done high kms...spent $5k on it over 10yrs, and sold it for scrap value at the end. Was still a lot cheaper than buying a new car on finance, or buying a more expensive 2nd hand one and still having some sort of repairs, as they do.

Hmm, many years since I replaced a clutch, but why would he recommend to change the flywheel? At that mileage it is unlikely that even the plate needs replacing, or the cover. Better to pull it first before making remarks like that. Also, may be a better option to drop the engine out rather than the gearbox.

I do see where you're coming from saying to keep it... got it off my ex's grandad for 7k. He only ever took it down to the shops and at the time it seemed like a decent price considering the odometer so thought it would be a safe buy.
I just hope that like you said, everything else on the car is in decent condition an as far as I can tell it is but I don't have enough mechanical experience to be sure.

I'm a shocker for keeping cars for long periods of time so it'll be a challenge... as long as it being so gutless doesn't bother me too much in the future I could give keeping it a go. We'll see

    Thanks for the input

Knowing the previous owner and its history, I would be inclined to keep it. Get the mechanic to give a quick opinion on the rest of the vehicles condition. Maybe shop around a bit on price to get that clutch done.

I'll have to look into that about the flywheel, replacing the clutch made sense to me but the flywheel not so much but this mechanics always been good to me so I didnt really question it

Machine the flywheel should be less than $100.
There is a place up here that was doing an exchange machined flywheel for $75

Mechanic did actually mention machining the flywheel, he said it wasn't an option though can't recall why

He might be confusing it with the dmf of the D2, as said no reason it cant be machined.
