The notorious clutch fork!
So...for a while now I've been convinced that my clutch felt a little "not right" but it's been feeling like that for ages. Making a bit of a rattle when out, and every time I put the clutch in and let it out it felt like something was rubbing or binding a little. I was sure it didn't used to feel like that but it's been like it for ages now and I did some decent bush trips with it like that. Also the guys who did some work to my car a while ago said not to worry about it and that it's fine just get out and drive. Of course they had no way to check if anything was wrong unless they pulled it apart to check.
Anyway, just a few days ago took it into LRA to get a few little things done and I was talking to them about how I was uncomfortable about the clutch and wanted to make sure it was all okay for bigger trips etc. Piece of mine. Found some receipts from previous owners, new clutch and fork in 2008 (not a heavy duty fork) and another...ANOTHER new clutch in 2009 by the second owner. Weird...
So LRA were uncomfortable about all this clutch work and they could see from a quick inspection that the fork in mine was NOT a heavy duty one, but they kept saying they just couldn't tell whether to pull it apart to check it out or not, obviously because it's a bit of money and it's my call ultimately especially since nothing had stopped working yet. They weren't pushy at all which was really good.
I decided to have them pull it apart to check the fork and at the very least just put a heavy duty one in there, and check out the clutch while they were at it. They called me later that day and told me what a great decision it was to get in there and have a look because low and behold...the clutch fork...HAD ALREADY FAILED! It was already broken and had been broken and hanging on by a thread for ages probably, while I was in the bush and everything, bloody hell was I lucky that it didn't go while I was in the middle of nowhere! It's felt weird for a while and as soon as I got it back today the pedal was smooth, the gear changes were smoother, it all felt like a clutch should feel again. They also said the clutch was in great shape so nothing to worry about there.
Just thought that was interesting
