You cant put a diff in neutral rather a gearbox.
So the fact you can roll rules out diffs i would think.
I imagine its either gearbox or transfer box.
Putting it in low lock does not help?
Hi all,
Last week i went for a drive to central coast in my 1997 manual land rover discovery 1 V8i got there with no problems, decided to go to the shops and about 5 mins before arriving the car started to jolt every now and then , so i pulled into woollies to let it sit for a bit and when i came back it started up fine so i started to drive off and about half way down the exit ramp the car comes to a complete stop and wouldn't budge at all no matter how much i revved. The only way the wheels turn is when i put the diff in neutral !!
Just wondering what the cause of it could be and if anyone has experienced it before?

So in gear and you rev it and nothing happens? Could be the clutch gone. Rev it all you like and nothing will happen.
Cheers Hall
I think he meant his CDL neutral? I know it's silly but is it engaged properly?
Otherwise what hall said clutch, auto could have fluid leak but not your problem.
If it was a fried clutch you would know by slipping first off but also the horrible smell it creates.
He said it wont move unless in neutral which i took as locked up when not in neutral?? Perhaps i was wrong. That would suggest box or transfer i would think?
If it still moved (rolled) while in gear then its something else like a doughnut gone, thats why i asked about cdl locked so it can eliminate that. Clutch would also be possible.
Do they run hydraulic clutches on discos? If so it could even be out of fluid but im not sure if its hydraulic.
Mmmmm burning clutch smells lik burning hair haha I have no clue about the clutch mines an auto.
I wonder if he sorted it?
Sounds like you've had the Centre Diff Lock engaged, and have suffered "wind-up". Make sure the Low-High range lever is fully over to the right, and fully in the High position.
If you're lucky, it hasn't broken anything. Otherwise you may be up for a Transfer Box rebuild/replacement.![]()
