How is the rear shaft mate? Specifically the donut?
Alright so I've been chasing this rattle (D1 V8). It started off really quiet but now it's getting loud. It goes away when I engage the park brake slightly and when I'm accelerating I can't hear it either.
I've already had a crack at tightening the adjuster. I parked it on a slight hill to make sure it wasn't tight when the handbrake is off. And tweaked it to the point where it was just letting the drum go with the handbrake off. I've only got 1 click now though I should probably back the cable off.
Should have I tightened the adjuster all the way and wear the shoes down?
Ive read it could be the front prop shaft, I had a look it's nice and solid in P and has a 1/8 play in D.
I can't hear the rattle in the car with the windows up either so I'm sorta thinking the handbrake isnt the problem.
I'm pretty stumped hope someone may have a clue
Cheers Jim

Mate look up hand brake rattle, mainly effects TD5 from what i have read. Classic sign rattle goes away or reduces with handbrake application. You need to remove the handbrake drum and the shoes and have a look if they (shoes) have a bright score mark on the metal edge of the shoe or the backing plate. If yes there's you problem. Heaps of posts on it. FWIW my 2001 TD5 Disco was shocking. I ended swapping out the whole handbrake assembly from a TDI Disco, Nay a noise now.
Check the backing plate, and the springs in the handbrake. Means pulling the drum off, but what else were you planning to do this weekend?
Usually a problem with the D2, but check out this thread want to see why the TD5 handbrake rattles?

Yeah the donuts on its way out but I'm pretty convinced it's not the donut. Its defiantly coming from the front of the car. And it's not the same symptoms as last time the donut went. I can feel the donut vibe when driving along but it's not the same sort of sound. Its more of a tinny noise like when you put an card in your pushbike spokes when you were a kid haha
Happen worse around corners?
Completely off topic but if your ever down this way let me know. I will show ya some tracks and possibly help with your disco if i can.
I have only lived here for 4 years or so and people come to me to find the good tracks Its something i do all the time. I find it soothing.
I've read about pulling the backing plate off. I guess it's about time I have a look at it all the symptoms are there.
Before I go pulling it apart should I buy some new springs or shoes?
And being a mid 90s car I'm guessing there's a high chance the shoes can be asbestos?
Cheers Jim
