    Squeaky Tensioner - Again

had a squeak which i thought was water pump for a while, seeing as my tensioner is barely 1 year old and sounded like bearing on pump. sprayed some wd40 on pump and squeak was still there. Sprayed some wd40 on tensioner and suddenly went quiet. i know these are prone to squeaking but not even one year is ridiculous. are there better versions around? i wasn't sure which serpentine belt to use but judging by my alternator pulley i went for smaller one. seems a little tight but not excessive. if i did have the smaller belt and needed the bigger one would it still fit? would it cause the tensioner to squeak. looking at how it's setup i would say other things would go rather than tensioner which is spring loaded.

    thanks.

IIRC, the bearing in the tensioner is a common 6203. Get a good quality one (with good seals) and swap it out.

Tried that. Was pain to get changed and didn’t stop squeak even though i got a good quality bearing. That was on older tensioner i should add. The one now is the third i have had to change. Are there issues with misalignment of pulleys on these? Again though. I would think PS or WP would be the ones to fail if this was the case.

It's the alignment of the spring loaded portion that causes the squeak. Rumour has it that you can put a 5c piece or similar shim under one side to correct it. I'd just shell out on another tensioner, preferably one with a known brand name on it.

I had the same problem. Had an alignment problem, bought a new tensioner, and had the same alignment problem. Shimmed it, and it's been fine for 20,000 kms. In between I had changed the head gasket and helicoiled the stud so that may have changed the face alignment enough that it needed shimming.

Just did the 5c (penny) trick to the tensioner. Put the 5c coin at 9 o’clock position behind tensioner and tightened up. Squeak completely gone. Amazing.

I will probably still get another tensioner as it’s been squeaky a while and got quite bad so bearing has probably seen better days. Will make sure to keep the 5c coin behind new one too.
