Well I persisted a bit more and after another 10 1/64th of an inch turns the stud loosened right up. So I managed to pull the stud out instead. I didn't have one laying around so I cut an m8 dyna bolt and used that for now. It dosnt sound like a lawn mower anymore which is great! A little leak so it still needs new gaskets but I'll get to that eventually. I wonder if the dyna bolt will hold up to the heat though. I'm pretty sure it's high tensile but it may just be yellow lol
    Cheers Jim

Glad to hear you sorted it man. I was under my car today and looked at whats involved to actually split the exhaust and it was more work than you wanted. Like you said above steering and a few other things would need to be tackled. Screw that if ya dont have too.
My car leaks from the exhaust everywhere! Dont have a rear muffler at all (cut it just after the diff so it dont catch when out bush) and the front one leaks as do the flange gasket things mid way. Makes it sound better IMO

Yeah it will do for now still a bit noisy from the flange, gaskets soon. I originally cut both my centre muffler and rear resi off. The centre one was filled with holes and was leaking into the cabin so I cut and welded a pipe in, and the rear was rusted out and couldn't handle the extra force.
4 ear deafening weeks and nearly dying going down a steep climb I finnaly forked for a new centre exhaust. It's still a free flow but still has enough back pressure for the engine. It's much quieter than straight pipe but still a bit offensive, enough to get me pulled over one day unfortunately sounds sweet at 3k through the burnley tunnel though. The straight pipe was brutal it would shake trees, but way too loud and stuffed the performance. All a bit boy racer for me in the 4x4 too much noise not enough go.
I plan on getting another resonator for the rear, going up hills in 3rd (auto) is annoying it gets old on long drives. Gotta 12hr drive with the wife and baby over Christmas so gotta calm it down a bit more.

You think adding the resonator will allow you to hit hills in top gear? Mine is auto also and i find some times i need to kick it back to get up the bigger ones.
I just thought it was a side effect of bigger wheels and not changing diff ratio. Never considered the resonator to be anything but a noise suppressor??

I'm not sure about up hill but my main concern is going down! When I first got the disco low 1 was like a tractor even for an auto. When I had the straight through it was impossible to descend safely, only way to labour the engine was with the handbrake. Now with the free flow muffler it's better but still needs help, a resi should give it more pressure. IMHO the stock system worked great for the engine, I don't know if you could really improve on it. I guess it's a double edged sword with an auto you compromise downhill back pressure for performance. Maybe someone here with a more performance exhaust system could elaborate because mine is far from performance.

Yea interesting mate. Never considered that.
My car even now in low can go down most hills without brakes. Just use 1st or 2nd low and let the system keep it in check. Never goes about 1500 rpm or something like that, cant remember but it does work bloody well.
That said i have noticed on some of the bigger hills it starts to run on, never thought about back pressure.
Got me wanting to learn more now.

Like I said with a straight pipe I had heaps of dramas, sweating bullets. The free flow muffler is much better than nothing at all but I still think I'd benefit with another muffler of some sort.
If you have the stock muffler you will have plenty of back pressure still. The resonator just makes the v8 sound more civil lol

I should have added with the straight pipe the revs don't pick up like they should. So you basically just roll down the hill. They way out of it is hand brake and accelerate slightly to get the engine to labor some. I'm guessing not good over long periods of time but it's better than dying!
