D1 has a Land Rover stud pattern, same as Austin Champ and Bofors anti aircraft gun. D2 has the same stud pattern as Holden Commodore.

That puts it in a totally different perspective.

I suspect its roots are BMW which also use 5x120 like the Commodore (VE+), the change happening under BMW ownership.

I guess you now know where to get 16" combat rims or 13" rims from.

I'm not sure about that. The P38A was in development before BMW bought LR in 1994 - the year the P38A was introduced.

From Range Rover P38 development story - how Rover replaced a classic icon

Work began on the project in 1988, with engineering and styling work being focused upon – but no deadline for launch was set. It was not until 1990, and with a budget of £300 million, that the project to replace the Range Rover was formally started under the codename of 38A.
I've just checked my copy of Range Rover - The Second Generation by James Taylor and he confirms the above. Here's his text from the book: Range Rover Second Generation: The Complete Story - James Taylor - Google Books

Unfortunately, one thing that didn't happen with the 1998 P38A update was the proposal to put the BMW 4.4 litre V8 into the P38A. I assume this is the engine that went into the L322 like mine.

I think it was more to do with wanting to use those stupid 19" wheels.

Forget the 19" wheels. I need a Bofors Gun on a trailer so I can carry an extra spare wheel or two for my D1.....
