Auto Trans jammed kick back cable

The old girl (97 Tdi, 320k km) auto, sprung a cooling line trans leak via rubbing while on the Oodnadatta track (great). Now it has a jammed kickback cable and will only change at 3000+ rpm, I had to get it to 120 km/hr for 4th..LOL

So...any ideas why the cable might be jammed..(it wont go back in, and is slack as outside of its housing)? The trans ran low on fluid and got hot before I realised there was a problem Houston. Anyway, now I have bypassed the leak temporarily with heater hose, so next is to fix the cable issue before ordering a replacement cooling line. Fun, fun!

    Any advice greatly appreciated

Di the cable itself get really hot? if it did it might be that the inner cable has melted into the outer sheath, I've had this happen to the actual selector cable on an overheated auto, the inner melts into the outer and as the outer now has a cable imprint (twisted spiral) on the inside the inner cable wants to twist as it is push/pulled which it can't do due to the connection at each end so it is locked.
You can test it by disconnecting one end and operating the cable, if it twists as it goes in and out then it is buggered, the only cure is a new cable.

    Thanks Oka....

How hot did it get? I don't know, very hard to say. I noticed drive was weakening and stopped, it seemed hot, but no idea how much.

The throttle end has a lot of slack cable (kickback) and I cant push the cable back in, it refuses to move ( it moves about 5mm back and forth). Initially the cable was stuck such that the throttle would not move at all, then it quickly released and has remained where it is. So, I doubt it's welded itself to the walls or it would not have moved.... Anyway, only way to figure this out will be to drop the pan I guess.

Ive managed to work the cable back and forth, its binding in spots, but gradually freeing up....most of it went back in and the box is changing more normally...but if the cable is pulled out I have to assist it back at this stage. See how it goes.
