I assume that with the name 'steely dan' it is steam powered and has a bad vibration in it?
One of my favorite things to do to classic rock fans is to explain where the name "Steely Dan" actually comes from. "Steely Dan" is a reference to William S. Burroughs' 1959 novel Naked Lunch, a book I'll admit to reading but not actually understanding. In Naked Lunch, "Steely Dan III from Yokohama" is a steam-powered dildo, which is not really something that comes to mind when listening to "Reelin' In The Years."

Well you learn something every day... The name is indeed due to the rock band and by extension... [emoji15]
Hi All,
Took Steely Dan for a nice drive on Sunday - through King Lake, Toolangi, Woorri Yallock, Cockatoo and onto Gembrook and back. About 250kms in total.
I set the clock, tuned the radio and just enjoyed driving it. Great car [thumbsupbig]

Hi All,
It's been quite some time since my last post... Apart from a new battery, a service, and a few trips - not much to report.
The clear coat on the roof has always been bad on Steely. I took it to a panel beater and asked for a price on re-painting the roof. The panel beater then pointed out that colour matching would be impossible, and that I should really re-paint the entire car.. Now in fairness that would be the best bet, but in all honesty I didn't want to spend $10K on a closed-door respray job..
The roof has been slowing getting worse, even though the car is parked in the shed.
I decided that I would re-paint the roof, and my job would be better than the existing paint... But probably only just! [smilebigeye]
Here are some pictures of the roof before I did anything. You can see that not only is the clear coat gone, but in some sections the primer is poking through:

First job - take the car into the shed, and by hand sand it back to a smooth finish. In hindsight I should have sanded it back to bare metal...

Next job - mask the car up. This took quite some time to do..

Next job - etch primer (2 coats):

Next job - top coat.. It was very difficult painting the roof, as I had to paint a section at a time, move the ladder, paint, move, etc.
The weather over the last month or two has been bad (less than 15c most days and rain) - so it took longer than I had hoped.
I painted multiple coats, with a wet & dry sanding between each coat with 800grit sand paper. Again - this isn't meant to be concourse - more I want to stop rust.
And the finished product - it's not perfect but it will do:

I will let it cure for a while before giving the roof a cut & polish.
I'm in no rush to paint a roof again.. If I had to do it again I would look at building some kind of platform around the vehicle.
Cheers,
GG
I know a guy that works at a hire company that could have got you some low trestles and planks... [bigwhistle]
