    Cup Day Jobs

    Hi All,

A public holiday here yesterday and I spent most of it working on the D1.

Removed all 4 wheels, put some spare wheels on, sanded and painted all 4 wheels (2 coats each):

I then sanded back, cleaned and painted the A & B Pillars. This in itself took a while as I had to remove the Snorkel first - which was a real PITA...

Then I spent over an hour masking everything up - I used a piece of cardboard to help with straight edges / over spray. Quite happy with the result.

Here it is during the first (of 2) coats:

And lastly sanded back the bonnet and painted it a fifth coat... Not overly happy with the bonnet - I can't seem to get the striping out of it.

I think that I will wait a week, let the paint cure, sand it back and give it another go... The more coats the merrier!

Over all I spent from about 8am to 5pm working on the car... Now I need a break for a few days.

    Cheers,
    GG.

    Looks a beauty!

Lt77 mainshaft is the symptom, the cause (most of the time) is the input gear into the LT230 and lack of lubrication (sound familiar) id pull the PTO cover and check that the input gear is cross drilled. Other than that, as Gav wrote, dont abuse it (with that brutish 200tdi Meet Steely Dan the D1) and it'll last.

Looking awsome mate! What paint did you end up using? I'd like to tidy my pillars up and all the other faded black one day....
    Cheers Jim

Are you sure your new shed is big enough?

New D1 looks to be very good. They are out there!

    Update

As mentioned before - the paint is looking a little tired. The worst spot being the bonnet and the drivers front guard:

I spent about an hour sanding it back. There seemed to be 3 distinct layers (although not across all of the panel)

    * Under coat
    * Bog (a fine layer)
    * Top Coat

While sanding I noticed that the pitting in the paint work was where the bog was - my guess is that either the bog had air bubbles in it or possibly that the bog just deteriorated over time?

Sanding back the bog was the hardest bit - the areas that just had the top coat & primer were the easiest.

    Sanded back:

    Primer:

And 3 coats of the top coat:

I will let the top coat cure until the weekend, and then I will give the entire car a wash, cut & polish and see what the match looks like.

From what I have seen in the dimming light, I rekon it won't be bad for a rough country job...

    Cheers,
    GG.

    Update

Another big weekend working on the D1... These things always seem to take a lot longer than expected.

First job - remove the rear bumper, bumper caps & the ribbed rubber cover.

You can see here that the bumper caps is quite faded and in need of some TLC:

The other one has a large crack in it - which will need a patch... I thought about glue / plastic welding, but I decided to go down a traditional Land Rover repair method... Pop Rivets..

Cleaned up, masked and ready for paint:

    And now painted:

The ribbed plastic cover - before cleaning & sanding:

    And painted:

Next up - fitted new dust covers (the originals were badly cracked):

And also polished the wheel carrier:

    More to come...

    Cheers,
    GG.

    More Work

The reason why I took of the rear bumper is - that it's got some bad surface rust on it.

It was only after I removed it that I noticed that it's also had a few love taps...

I did some panel beating - via some wood blocks and a rubber mallet, and it came up ok.

I then spent about an hour sanding back the surface rust.

And here it is after a few coats of paint:

These are some brackets from the Snorkel / wheel arch - after sanding:

And a lick of paint later:

Not happy with the bonnet - this is how it looked as of Saturday night:

It's quite stripy / with uneven colour.

Over the weekend I went and dry sanded it using 3,000 grit paper - which helped make the surface very smooth, and evened out some of the paint.

I then re-coated another 4 coats of paint.

And then sanded it with 3,000 grit again.

Tonight if time allows I will give it a cut and polish.

It's looking better now - but still needs some more love.

So was it just those two bolts for the rear bumper? Need to take mine off to fix indicator and end caps and was going to respray as well.

    Hi Val,

Yep - two bolts that connect the main bumper to the chassis.

Then it's easy to remove the bumper caps off - they are held on via a screw, a captive nut and a captive bolt... Much easier to take these off once the bumper is removed though.

    Cheers,
    GG.

    Great work, enjoying your thread.
I'll start something similar when I start to do mine up, they just poured the slab for my new garage so I'll have a place to work on it.
