    Meet Steely Dan the D1

    Hi All,

So somehow this ended up coming home with me on Saturday. Don't ask me how - it was like a little lost puppy that just followed me home..

It's a 1993 D1 - 200 Tdi, 5 speed manual in very good mechanical condition. The paint work needs a tidy up, and some new car seat covers and floor mats and that's about it..

The bonnet & drivers side front guard are the worst paint wise:

Engine bay - you can see that it's been looked after:

Speaking to the owner (Nick) he said: "Whenever I heard a funny noise I would investigate it and fix it". He has bought some spares along the journey:

Spare: Turbo, Alternator, Viscous Fan, 2nd spare wheel, Front & Rear Seats, Carpet, Brake Booster, Coolant Tank, Washer Bottle, Grill, Front Light Surrounds, some plastic trim bits, front mud guards, and various light bulbs / seals, etc.

    Cheers,
    GG.

I like the air filter set up better on the disco compared to Defender. Is the box a LT77?

    Small jobs started...

Once I got the car home, the first job was to completely re-arrange the shed so that it would fit in...

That took longer than expected (probably 3-4 hours) because I swept the floor, put all of the spare parts away, etc.

Looking at the car - the roof, bonnet, and front drivers side guard needs painting.

The original paint colour is "Arken" - a metallic grey, and given the fact that the car is 25 years old - I'm never going to get the paint matched.

So I've decided to paint various bits a satin black.

First up I grabbed the 2nd spare:

Sanded it back, and painted it 2 x coats of Satin Black.

Test fit on the rear of the car - yep, happy with that:

Next up - remove the bonnet. Here it is (wet) 2nd coat.

    INSPECTION /Work Done
I crawled around underneath the vehicle before buying it - and I liked what I found..
I didn't find any oil leaks - the owner said that he had replaced all seals on the diffs, etc.
The gearbox has been rebuilt 30,000 KM ago - I asked the owner but he wasn't sure if the gearbox had been upgraded with the Ashcroft bits. Therefore I suspect not.
No slack in the prop shafts - the owner said that every few months he would grease them.
    Everything electrical worked.
Aircon worked but wasn't that cold - could probably due with a re-gas.
    Suspension bushes have been replaced.
    Rotors & pads replaced.
Tyres have plenty of tread on them for a RWC.
Owner has fitted a boost gauge.
Owner has fitted a new radio/CD.
No sunroof (bonus in my eyes)
    Tow Bar fitted.
Owner said that on a highway run it will get 700km out of a tank - I have yet to test this.
Drove well home (2 hours) - temp gauge didn't budge from just below half.

    TO DO LIST
Chase an electrical gremlin - the blinker light stays on (I'm guessing a faulty earth)
Full Service (liquids, coolant, diffs, filters, etc) - although I suspect that this isn't required, I look to be cautious.
    Air-con re-gas.
Paint Bonnet - at least 4 coats
Paint all 6 wheels (2 already done)
    Paint Roof
    Paint A & B Pillars
    Paint rear Bumper
    Paint front Bumper
    Front carpet mats
    Front seat covers
    RWC and Historic Registration

    Wish me luck..

    Cheers,
    GG.

    Hi rar110,

Yep the gearbox is the dreaded LT77.... The previous owner had it rebuilt about 30,000km ago - although he wasn't sure if it had the upgraded Ashcroft Main Shaft in it.

Oh - the head gasket has been replaced, and when that was done he has the head tested - which came out fine.

The car has 228,000km on it... Not bad for a 25 year old car - that's about 9,000km a year.

The previous owner gave me a stack of receipts - for the parts, tyres, head gasket, seals, services, etc. He seemed to service it regularly and replaced anything on it that needed to be done at the time.

Last week he replaced the right-rear caliper because it was leaking.

    Cheers,
    GG.

Don’t worry too much about the LT77 - they will survive fine with normal driving, even towing. It’s abuse and shock loading that kills them. My RRC had an LT77 in it - the in-laws drove it over 300,000KM over 20 years without issue - and towed a caravan around Australia twice in that lot. It still worked ok when removed but the synchros were a bit had it is all.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Yep just make sure it is properly serviced, with a proper flush, not just a drain.
