    Driveline Noise

Got me worried now. On way to work today i had to dodge somebody a bit and then accelerate out, noticed a few minutes later along freeway that when coasting i get a sound similar to putting a magazine against a fan (but quieter) and rattle coming from under centre console.

First thought was unis. Just for the hope of it not being gearbox related. On load you cant hear it. Just when coasting in any gear or speed, directly related to engine speed. In neutral or with clutch in you can’t hear it.

I read up a bit and culprits could be exhaust loose at some point (possibly related to this guy rear ending me month back), unis or shafts, tcase or gearbox. Few other opinions out there but the ones listed seems most likely.

Not sure if gearbox (r380) has ever been rebuilt. The tcase was rebuilt three years ago. Unis don’t know. Exhaust is about 4 years old.

I’m upset because the dear thing has been running so beautifully lately. Bummer these things just pop up.

Any thoughts would be very helpful.

When i had a bad rumble on coasting it was worn splines in the rear driveshaft. Id just put a 2nd hand shaft in after snapping the original, and I didnt check the splines but they were flogged.

seems the tapping sound is gone now which is weird. only lasted a few days but it left behind what now sounds like a gearbox noise. very faint but there. there seems to be some slack in the driveline and a bit more backlash when changing gears. i'm talking small amounts but definitely different.

what's more concerning though, is the other day backing out from my driveway the brake pedal went hard and was difficult to stop the car. so the brakes have issues. i need to replace pads etc anyway but the hard pedal is another issue that's just popped up out of nowhere after years of very nice operation.

i checked vacuum hoses yesterday and all seemed ok. couldn't see any obvious splits/leaks. is there a way to isolate whether the problem is vacuum pump or booster?

another thing is that when i'm just coasting slowly from first or reverse, it's more noticeable. when i'm driving the brakes still feel fairly normal. something to do with compression possibly?
