the stock fuel tank has always been plastic and is the same tank from petrol to diesel its just the bit that goes in the top that changes for the pump/pickup/gauge.
Steel tanks are typicaly after market long range jobs.
Does anyone know what model year the plastic fuel tanks were fitted to the 300Tdi?

Be aware that there was a factory recall on them. I cannot recall which years were affected, maybe all of them, but my petrol 1997 was one of them. They leaked when fully topped up, not sure just why.
that was to do with the breather vent for when filling...

yes they had vents in each corner at the top, with hoses that ran across the top.
AFAIR either the hoses used to pop off or the spigot used to crack.
