245/70 or 245/75 are a good fit.
Hi, My D1 TDI is up for new tyres. Currently running BFG 235/70/16 tyres. Drives fine, BFG good tyres but this size looks a bit undersize for the D1. I don't want to increase the tyre diameter too much given the TDI is not the most powerful vehicle ever produced. The engine is stock standard and I don't want to increase fuel settings etc. I do mostly on road and a bit of beach driving.
Am considering the Toyo 255/65/16.
Welcome any recommendations or advice.
thanks.
James

245/75R16. Only requires a tiny trim. If your engine feels underpowered it probably needs some loving.
What is your top speed?
Unsure what top speed is. I drive it about 95-100km. The T/c locks up correctly at about 80km. It goes ok, just don't want to make it slower than it already is.
Will look into the 245/70/16 tyres.
thanks
I have 245/75/R16 on my D1. It is a V8, but the GPS speed always shows exactly the same as the speedo. The TC locks up the same as yours.
I have 245/76/16 on mine, but it's a manual. Goes ok, but I do have to pedal going uphill still.

i used that when i changed mine to 245/75R16 BFG KO2. had original size duellers before. makes a difference at take off. i found that the brakes became less responsive too. nicer at highway speeds though and offroad (sand).
generally if my speedo is saying about 95 i think, i'm doing 100 real speed.
For beach driving you want a taller and skinny tire, yes skinny not fatter, a lot will disagree but that is the proven fact by physics and real world, sadly a lot will still disagree but each to there own.
You get a longer track when deflated and that is what gives best floatation and traction with the least rolling resistance
235 / 85 is the best size for a standard D1 IMO
Discovery 1 4.6, true trac front and rear, superior engineering arms, old tourer now bush toy
Discovery 4 3.0 HSE MY13 ECB Bull bar, winch, spot lights, aux fuel tank, Kaymar rear bar, duel wheel carriers, 18 tuff ant wheels 265/65/18 BFG KO2's for play
On our D1 the 245/70/16s fitted without rubbing, but 245/75/16s rubbed.
Did on at the is right about taller being better than wider.
Taller gives a longer track so more float. Wider just gives a wider mound of sand to be overcome. Wider is for show not practicality, I think.
That's why our Defender comes with taller 235/85/16s for better traction.
Discomatt (stupid auto correct).
