In my case this trip last week, I worked out that my viscous hub wasn't engaging.. getting hot up hill.
Normally I drive on the faster dusty roads with A/C on, but due to the VC not working I didn't want to push my luck.
So to be sure engine stayed cool(er) I ran without A/C. hence dusty .. everything!

My last trip out Cobar/Broken Hill about 12+ months ago(I think), when I ran on a few dirt roads(80k/h or so) out Menindee/Pooncarie way, no problems .. I put up with the high 90's engine temp. I vaguely remember engine temp topped out in the high 90's down that way.
So I close windows, set recirc, A/C on .. no dust.
Drive across from Cobar to Broken Hill, there was one kind'a steepish hill just approaching BH, and engine temp peaked at 117! with A/C on. Only a very short time(30 sec or so).. backed off, A/C off and cooled down.
But that was just the climb section, for the 200 odd klms on the flat, it sat in the 90's. Ambient was about 43°C that day.
I didn't run with the A/C on all the way, just every now and then, mainly to see how hot the Tdi would run.
With the A/C on, and the temp sitting at about mid to high 90's, I'd turn off the A/C run for a good half hour and temp would eventually settle back into the low to mid 80's.

And yep! .. A/C electric fans both come on with A/C on .. and I assume they both push air in the right direction! (haven't actually checked tho).

Cripes! You must be some sort of Heat Loving Masochist!

I dumped my VC fan a few years ago & fitted a 16" Electric with thermostat which seems to hold up well but I certainly don't do the trips you do..

Stupidly (? ) I still carry it in the back for the 'just in case time' together with the correct size hub spanner while 'er indoors keeps asking..... "Are you sure we are not carrying any dead weight around 'cos the man at the RAA says it costs".

    If she only knew.

    LOL!
don't mind heat .. dry desert heat. Can't handle high humidity tho. Dargo Last week was humid, stifling, then a breeze picked up and almost blew my father away!

Now with the VC half dead in mine, I/m thinking of trying an electric fan mod too.
    Your 16" .. what brand.
I read that Spal is supposed to be good.
    Issue is cost-benefit ratio.
Judging by the way my D1 drives, I'm assuming that the VC is hardly ever engaged(unlike on a V8), so any economy benefit will be close to zero.
VC hubs are relatively cheap(unlike years ago for a RRC).

    decisions, decisions ... !

    Arthur,

Given the difference between the A/C on temp of 100C, and A/C off temp of high 80's that you are reporting, I would suggest that you do check that fan. I'm only seeing a degree or two difference - though my A/C off temp is mid 90s.

I'm also interested in your comment "Over winter with fan on or off, I get 80-83°C coolant running around town,". Do you have a thermostat installed? The new one I bought for my cooling problems doesn't open till the high 90's.

With regard to the Viscous fan, why don't you just fuse it so that it is locked on? I never understood how they added any benefit.

    Regards,
    LateAgain.

Davies Craig, a good Aussie one. 16" Thermatic(R) Electric Fan (12V) (0166) I haven't even blocked off the remainder of the Rad face so there could be a tad of recycled air but haven't noticed undue probs in that respect. Obviously mounted on the inside face & plastic cowl is now superfluous. ie. not fitted.

Spal may be ok (I've not heard of it) & DC may have even progressed over th last 5-7 years, who can say?

Interesting thread i've finally replaced my ac compressor as the clutch bearing seized. I've since found out that that both my ac fans don't work. Cant spin either by hand so i assume they're seized.
Idk what mod you guys have done but with mine it'll sit on about 88-90 and push up to 102 on a big hill with egt getting up over 600 i've never been above 650. once you come down the hill and let it cool off temps will go back down. Is my VC fan working?? who knows are my ac fans working?? definitely not. I haven't used my ac since re-gas as i realised the fans aren't working and i don't want to stress the car.
Now i have to figure out some replacements i think going with 2ndhand ones is a waste of time as they'll likely be on their way out already.

    .....
Fan on/off = viscous hub fan physically removed. hub spanner always in car, so easy to remove/replace.
Over winter I left it off for at least 2 months that I remember .. may have been 3(~ May/Jun to about Aug) .. but as I remember we had a lot of 12°C days. Does help the engine hit a decent operating temp quicker too(about 2mins or so).
Zero reduction in fuel economy tho.
What I have installed: 1Gauge gauge system, using VDO sensors. So monitoring, oil temps, coolant temps, etc. The handy bit is that I no longer need to remember the values!(it does logging).

Up until recently, I'd see coolant temps more like 85-ish C. But then I changed the old waxtstat thermostat, to a tridon and it dropped to about 80-83°C.
With the waxstat, I'd see high 80's easily on the coolant gauge.
With the tridon thermostat, now, I never see more than about 83C 99% of the time, and I do remember one time ambient was about 35ish, up a moderately hard climb, trying to maintain 100k/h .. I did see 85°C(no A/C).
But with A/C on, I get a steady mid to high 80's on an easy drive, and I've seen over 100 up a moderate hill.
I usually back off with those sorts of temps, but on the highway I turn the A/C off .. as I'm just 'testing'. I usually drive with A/C off on the highway.

Tridon is the 190 model, so 88°C, and in testing it does start to open at 83°C .. which basically confirms what my coolant gauge now shows. it's only a slight opening, but it's much faster acting than the old waxstat. At about 85-88 the Tridon is fully open.
Waxstat by comparison only just started to crack open in the high 80's. It was actually hard to tell, on first try it started at about 90+C. but then once tested, it was more like high 80's.
But it's opening was miniscule by comparison to the tridon. Even at 100C the waxstat struggled to open fully .. took a long time.

Maybe try a Tridon thermostat. Part number is TT388-190. I prefer it's operation compared to the Waxstat.
ps. I also got the Tridon 180 version(78°C) as well, but never tried it. Only tested it, and it does start to open at about mid 70's fully in the high 70's. I'm happy with the 88°C version operation ATM.
    Arthur.
