The spare on a D1 is typically a steelie and held on by different wheel nuts.

Yes they are different wheel nuts, they are like series nuts or steel wheel nuts but they are much thinner which is for looks really. The idea is to use the 3 that come with the spare which have a taper and 2 of the alloy nuts also. Good idea to keep 5 steel nuts (the big thick ones) in your kit incase you have to use your spare for a while on the road.

Hmmmm. Ours has a matching alloy on the tall door - not a steel wheel spare. I tried three of the capped nuts on the spare wheel carrier but the threads of the studs on the carrier are longer than the internal thread on the nuts so they go tight before reaching the wheel. The thread inside the capped wheel nuts only goes half way or so.

My guess is its because you dont have a wheel cover. I have a steel spare and a wheel cover with open nuts. The wheel cover acts as a big washer, if you tighten the bolts too much it will crack.
Maybe try getting 3 or 6 steel wheel nuts and put them on the bolts 1st to pack the wheel out enough to get the nuts tight. Otherwise get a wheel cover and open nuts. Best I can think of as I said I have a steel spare, maybe someone has a better solution.
    Cheers Jim
