Contemplated (still am really) doing a body swap on one of my D1s for rust reason as well. I am led to believe it is not such a huge job.
So my shed is finished and time to work on the Disco. Car is very low K's but I did notice some rust, sadly it looks pretty bad now I've had a good poke around. So where to from here, do I try to welded it up, big job by the look of it or do I look for another shell and transfer the running gear. Chassis is rust free so I could pick up a V8 shell (it's a 300Tdi) on put it on too, a few options I suppose.
What are peoples thoughts?

That's what I've read too. It's a shame as the car is super low K's and in otherwise fantastic condition, I took a risk when I bought it and knew there could be issues.
If the chassis is good then it might be worth fixing the rust or replacing parts of the body.
There was a bloke on a UK forum that I belonged to in another life that had a Discovery left to him by a friend that died. Lots of rust but he methodically worked through it all & the final images looked really great compared to the initial images.
He did have some mechanical knowledge & a good equipped workshop that his father had left him so that helped.
"You pays your money & makes your choice" I guess.
Have you looked under the carpet yet?
Depends which is the cheapest way to go - out with the spreadsheet! Leave it and treat it with lots of lanolin spray, get a few years out of it then get rid of it. Take it to a fabricator. Buy a donor replacement. Buy a mig/argon setup and learn to weld.
Even with a donor there is no guarantee that there is no rust somewhere that will eventually need replacement and you should get early into it before it becomes worse, via lanolin, fabricator or self weld..
Basic welding and metal shaping is not too hard. I've repaired what you have photographed and much much more on an old RRC, that in many respects is similar to the D1 body. I've also repaired a bread plate sized hole in a D1 floor using the metal siding from an old desk top computer.
Up here you can weld 4x4 panel work yourself. You will need a certified welder to touch the chassis.
Your first photo is definitely a weld fix. The second, maybe not so bad - sand blast and paint?
Took the front left guard off, top of the inner wing and along where the guard meets the body on the door pillar.
Thanks for the replies folks. Time to have a think what to do. Car has 144,000 on it and is in otherwise great condition, I noticed a small amount of rust when I bought it and knew I was taking a gamble. There is a tdi with a blown engine for sale in that the owner claims has no rust, so might be worth a look. It was always going to be a project so no hurry.
