Yep, common for the shims to disappear like that. Cheap and easy to replace. As long as there is no other damage, the TC will be fine with new ones - they are cheap and easy to get. There are a couple of threads here about them. 👍
Hey folks,
So today i stripped down my LT230 as it has a clunk when the diff is locked sometimes.
It turns out there is no brass domed washers left at all in the center diff. Only pieces of them remain scattered around the inside of the diff.
The planetary gears therefore have been able to contact the diff carrier directly and have worn a small circular area into the carrier as well as a small circular area where the planetary gear teeth have worn a small circular area.
My question is this: has anyone just replaced the domed washers in a circumstance such as this and the diff has lived on? I know i should probably replace the whole diff carrier... I was looking for an excuse to buy one of the ATB diffs from Ashcroft but they are expensive!
I test fitted new domed washers to the planetary gears and they do still provide enough clearance to stop the gears from hitting the carrier again...
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

The ultimate centre diff fix, albeit a few $$$ to buy is an Ashcroft ATB centre diff
Much reduced backlash, eliminates the weak cross pin, no thrust washers to munch and better on and off road driving dynamics

If i had the money, I would definitely spend it on atb. And one in each diff too 😢
If you have wear on the hemisphere halves where the thrust washers were you will probably have to reshim the side gears with thicker thrust washers to get the correct preload on the centre diff gears. It will still be a bit sloppy unless you do this.

So i have the TC case mostly assembled.
The last job to do is set the preload on the intermediary gears. I have the bearings collapsible spacer etc and nipped up the nut on the end of the shaft to get rid of visible end float. However i am finding the additional preload of 1.25nm which equates to 125grams on a weight scale is tricky/impossible to measure.
I attach a string around the input gear and pull the weight scale but the force is tricky to get stable enough to read - let alone see a 125gram difference!
Has anyone rebuilt a TC and just nipped up the endfloat on the intermediary gears and left it at that. How on earth am i meant to measure a 125gram difference? I am hoping these LT230 boxes are tough enough to run fine with just the endfloat missing?
Thanks
